Two Chairs No Waiting

Our last episode was the question and so it’s fitting that this would be our answer.  A lot of folk either called or wrote in with their opinion about who’s bank book Andy Taylor was looking at in the episode “Opie’s Fortune.”

The question, if you didn’t hear #74 was: Who’s bank book was Andy looking at, his own or Parnell Rigsby’s, when he said, “Ain’t that the saddest bank book you ever saw?” Go back and listen if you missed Two Chairs No Waiting #74…we’ll wait on you.

    Allan,

I checked out the episode “Andy’s Investment” in season 8 and could not see anywhere that Andy took out his bankbook. They talked a lot about money but didn’t show this. At least not in the DVD I have.

Thanks for checking on that, Ken! If anybody else thinks they’ve seen Andy with another bankbook, let us know!

    Allan,

I was the only one to post a comment on Episode 74. I know you received lots of answers but was just curious if you saw my comment. I had a different take in that I always thought the bank book was Opie’s, one that Andy set up for him. Especially because of Andy saying “isn’t that the saddest bank book you ever saw”. Just doesn’t seem like Andy would say that about his own bank book. See my comment under Episode 74

    Thanks – John Foster

Hi Allan, I believe Andy has to take out his bankbook in the Episode “Keeper of the Flame”. When it appears that Opie may have burned down a barn, Andy has to assume the responibility. He gets out his bankbook and tells barney, “Ain’t the saddest bankbook you ever seen?”.

    Love the site!

Well, I left my comment/vote on the last episode. I would add that if I remember right, Opie found a purse with $50 in it, nothing else was mentioned. Good feedback. Enjoyed the podcast.

Seems like everyone believing its Andy’s bankbook refers to physical aspects of the episode (the size of the purse, why the bankbook didn’t have a name on it, why the bankbook wasn’t shown earlier, etc.) But to me the most important thing about TAGS is how the dialog was always true to the character. And with that being said, it would be completely out of character for Andy to state to Barney, “ain’t that the saddest looking bank book you ever saw.” Andy would never bemoan his own financial situation to anyone in such a way. But that statement would completely coincide with Parnell’s situation.
Andy learned several times, you have to go with what you know about someone’s character and not just what you see. (Mr. McBeevee, Keeper of the Flame). Same rule applies here in how the bank book was addressed in the dialog, not what is or not shown. It was Mr. Rigsby’s.
