Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Back in 1972, while visiting the Indy 500 race with some friends, Jim Nabors was asked to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana.”  He didn’t really even know the song and it was only minutes before he was to sing it as part of the opening ceremonies. In the time since, Jim has only missed singing the song to start the race about 6 times.

Two Chairs No Waiting researcher, Mike Peacock, found this interview with Jim Nabors and was able to provide permission to use the audio.  You’ll get to hear Jim tell about singing at the race and how it all got started.  Interviewer Ed Wenck of 93 WIBC was able to speak with Mr. Nabors recently. Enjoy the interview.

Allan, I am curious — was the recording you used in the podcast of Jim Nabors singing “Back Home Again” from this year or from another year? If it was from this year, then his voice is remarkably strong for someone his age.

Enjoyed the interview with Jim. Just another great examle of how well rounded this podcast is. The variety of Mayberry related content here is amazing and very entertaining. I was aware of Jim’s singing at the Indy as of only a few years ago, but I am sure that outside of this podcast I would have never seen the interview nor heard him sing this song! It was a cool event that the Commandant of the Marine Corps promoted him to LCpl….In entered the Marines in the summer of 1972 and you just would not believe how many times I thought back of Gomer Plye USMC during my tour of duty…we actually had some Gomer Pyle type Marines around from time to time…. LOL
