TCNW 430: Mountain Omens & Superstitions #3

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:24:17

I’ve done a couple of Mountain Omens & Superstitions episodes but it has been a year and a half since the last one so I thought it was about time to do another. The mountain wisdom from the Darling family and their kin is something we can have fun with and I know I grew up hearing many of these. My wife knows even more of these because her mom often quoted them to her as a child.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Jim Nabors.

Allan, I had never heard of most of these old superstitions, but one of them rang a bell. You said if your nose itches, someone will visit you. When I was growing up, my mom would sometimes say, “My nose itches. Somebody’s coming with a hole in their britches!” She would laugh every time and say that my Grandma used to say this when she was growing up. She thought it was funny, so she would repeat it. Consequently, I still remember that silly saying, and sometimes when I’m at home and my nose itches, I say that to my daughter. I guess I’m hoping that someday when she has a family, she will say that to her own kids and tell them that her great-grandmother used to say that. Well, it’s kind of like a family tradition, and I like things that provide a link to the past. 🙂
