TCNW 746: Thelma Lou Retired to Mayberry

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:29:49

The Surry Arts Council has been having an auction of items that belonged to Betty Lynn, Mayberry’s own Thelma Lou, in order to raise money for the arts in Mt. Airy, NC. The auction just ended but it brought to mind the impact that Betty had on the city of Mt. Airy during the time she lived in the community.

I found this article about Betty moving to “Mayberry” that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. She was such a wonderful person to be around and is greatly missed but her legacy certainly lives on every time we watch The Andy Griffith Show and also in support of the arts in Mt. Airy.

We play some extra trivia in this episode so stick around for all the fun.

TCNW 725: Singing in Mayberry

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:44:39

I’ve been going through some old video tapes and finding treasures that I’m pretty sure you’ll never have seen unless you were at Mayberry events back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Because large sections of this podcast episode were taken from video tapes, I would suggest that you may want to watch the video version of this show. It will be fun to hear but seeing and hearing might be even better.

Special singers from Mayberry will be Thelma Lou (Betty Lynn) and Ernest T. Bass (Howard Morris). These performances were during Col. Tim’s at Mayberry Days but I don’t have a record of the year. I’m pretty sure it was in the early 2000’s because you’ll see my son, Adam, featured fairly often because his mom was doing the filming. Seems moms might like seeing their boys reaction more than focusing on Howard Morris….at least at times.

A less special singing performance will be by “Floyd.” Okay, he/I don’t really sing but I do perform with great friend of Mayberry, The VW Boys, in Kingsport, TN back in 1999.

We’ll play some trivia and ask you a question if you stick around until the end.

TCNW 657: Betty Lynn Fans Remember

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:36:28

In episode 655 of Two Chairs No Waiting we celebrated the life of Betty “Thelma Lou” Lynn who we lost on Saturday October 16, 2021. During that episode I asked to hear your memories of Betty and several of you responded.

The memories of Betty her impact on the lives of those around her, including fans of The Andy Griffith Show, are strong enough that folks took time out of their day to either record a voice mail or send in written thoughts. I believe that these memories will continue to have an impact on us all and I know you’re going to enjoy hearing from fellow fans.

This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “James Seay” part 3.

TCNW 655: Betty Lynn Remembered

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:35:07

On Saturday October 16, 2021 near the mid-night hour Mayberry fans lost the lovely Betty Lynn, our much loved “Thelma Lou.” We’re going to celebrate the amazing life of Betty by talking about her long career in Hollywood and before when she was in the USO.

There are so many memories about Betty and how she impacted the lives of those around her. She had such an impact that she’s even responsible for the creation of the “Mayberry Meet-up” that Two Chairs No Waiting leads each year in Mt. Airy, NC. My trip to go and interview her for the podcast was the generation of the meet-up that has been going strong since 2013. So, Betty was drawing people together even when she didn’t realize she was doing so.

This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Betty Lynn.”

We’ve had reports from “on the scene” and heard from Betty related to her birthday back on 29 August 2016 but on this episode we get to hear from some of the folks who traveled to Mt. Airy, NC to be part of “Thelma Lou’s” birthday celebration.  These are fans, just like you and me, who we able to make there way to the Andy Griffith Museum and wait in line to get Betty’s autograph and to spend just few minutes in her company.

What would make someone travel to the town of Mt. Airy, NC just on the chance of spending time with someone they’ve admired for years?  Why is was it important to them?  Let’s ask them and see what answers we get about what brought them to be there in that line.

If you  missed episode 392, I recommend you head back and enjoy that episode before you move foreword with this episode since it’s Part 2.   Part 2 of what?  Well, just one of the biggest days Mayberry has had for quite a while.

29 August 2016 was a BIG day celebrating Betty “Thelma Lou” Lynn’s 90th birthday in Mt. Airy, NC and let me tell you, it was a sight to behold.  I recommend you watch the video versions of the podcast to actually “see” the goings on so you’ll be able to feel like you were there.

This episode we focus on the evening of the celebration when we traveled downtown to the Earle Theater there in Mt Airy to watch “June Bride.”  June Bride was a 1948 movie staring Betty Davis, Robert Montgomery, and a young Betty Lynn in the title role.

We can’t watch the movie on the podcast but we can hear from Betty and her memories of the film and the stars.  PLUS we hear from North Carolina Lt Gov Dan Forest with a special presentation.  PLUS PLUS…a couple of “Mayberry” boys send their regards.  IT’S BIG!!
