TCNW 739: Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:34:03

Jim Nabors birthday is this week so I thought this would be a good time time to talk about the show that made him famous. Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. originally aired on the CBS television network from September 25, 1964, until May 2, 1969. The series was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show with the pilot episode airing as the fourth season finale on May 18, 1964.

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. was also a major ratings hit, just as was it’s parent from Mayberry, never placing lower than tenth in the Nielsen ratings and ending its run as the second-highest-rated series in the United States.

We play some trivia and see how we do. I hope you enjoy the show.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:15:42

We’ve talked about who is Andy, Opie, Barney, and Aunt Bee so I thought it was time to branch out to the other citizens of Mayberry outside the Taylor family circle.

How much do you know about Gomer Pyle?  Did you know he’s Goober’s cousin?  Did you know he lived in the back room over at Wally’s Service?  What else do you know about him?  We’ll, this episode will help you brush up on your knowledge and help you know Gomer just a little better.

This episode we are able to hear from four of our listeners.

Calvin called in to talk about how many touching scenes there are on The Andy Griffith Show.  We all know that TAGS is funny but we often forget just how much the show pulled at our hearts with episodes like Opie the Birdman or Mr. McBeevee.  The writers were amazing in that they could make us laugh one week and then tear up the next. Calvin also mentioned what he thought was a blooper in “Cousin Virgil” and we’ll clear that up

Dick tells us that all Mayberry fans should get a copy of Mayberry 101 so they can learn even more wonderful facts about why the writers of TAGS did what they did during episodes.

Gary  noticed a strange and curious happening that involves Gomer’s tie and Mr. Weaver.

And lastly, we hear from Michael who shares his love of our podcast and Mayberry.

Thank all of them for calling and thank you for taking time to visit with them, and me, during this trip to Mayberry.

Two Chairs No Waiting 204: Jobs in Mayberry

Two Chairs No WaitingHost: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:23:10

The Labor Day holiday is upon us here in the ole US of A so it had me thinking that there were several times jobs/labor were talked about in the town of Mayberry.   We’ll visit with Aunt Bee, Gomer, and Opie as they attempt to find jobs in our home town.

Aunt Bee gets her job from some folks using green ink to print…things.  Gomer gets fired by Wally and tries to find a different job all the while staying with the Taylor’s at their house.

We’ve talked about Opie getting a job (back on episode 131 of Two Chairs) but we’ll look at it from a slightly different point of view this time.  All-in-all the jobs in Mayberry don’t seem too hard to get but keeping this is like holding on to a greased pig.

Come on with me and let’s visit in Mayberry.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

A fellow fan of The Andy Griffith Show, Matthew Morgan, contacted recently to tell me that he’d seen something special while watching Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.  This is certainly “inside baseball”, so to speak but big Mayberry fans will remember and hopefully enjoy our trivial meanderings through the world of Mayberry, NC.

In the season 7 episode of The Andy Griffith Show “Barney Comes to Mayberry”, yeah..it is color but stick with me, Barney Fife returned to Mayberry and happens to be on the same train with Teena Andrews, a Mayberry native returning to town for the premiere of her new Hollywood movie.

Teena’s publicity man learns she used to date Barney back when she was known as Irene Flogg so he arranges for Barn to escort her to the premiere.

Now that you’re up to speed on who Teena Andrews is, you’ll want to give a listen to find out how Teena shows up in the Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. season 4 episode called “Change Partners.”

I also want to mention Movie’s for the Blind where you can download and listen to, currently, 4 episodes of TAGS like they are audio books.  I think you’ll enjoy it and it’s a great service for those Mayberry fans who are visually impaired.
