I’m always looking for things we may never have seen related to our friends in Mayberry. That being stories, photos, articles, or just about anything touching on either the characters on The Andy Griffith Show or the actors who played them.
I recently ran across an article from the Los Angeles Times from January 12, 1960 titled “Howard McNear as Acting Specialist” and felt like I had struck gold. There isn’t any talk about his time on The Andy Griffith Show because McNear first appeared as Floyd in the episode “Mayberry Goes Hollywood” on January 2, 1961, almost a year after this article was published. He had already been a barber on TV tough because he appeared as “Andy the barber” on season 2, episode 8 of “Leave it to Beaver” called “The Shave” (November 20, 1958). It was a memorable yet fairly small role that may have paved the way to Mayberry.
I realize I’m a bit biased toward this actor but I hope you’ll enjoy hearing a bit more about him and his career before “Floyd.” I’ve done nine episodes of the podcast about Howard McNear but since I’ve done about 740 episode that are not about him, I think I’m balancing pretty well.
We’ll play some trivia to wrap up the fun. Sit back and enjoy the show!

We’re starting things off right with a wonderful report from Randy Turner and his “This Week in Mayberry History” about the very behind the scenes world of the 40 Acres backlot.
We finish up with a few fun trivia questions for everyone to enjoy.
Happy new year to all!

High Sheriff of Two Chairs No Waiting for Episode #716: Rex & Jamie Pennycuff Executive producer of Two Chairs No Waiting for Episode #716: Attendees of Mayberry Meet-up 2022
Howard “Floyd the barber” McNear would have been 115 years old on January 27, 2020 so I wanted to tell you a little about the man who kept Mayberry’s hair looking so good.
Did you know that both Howard McNear and his brother married women with the same given name? Did you know he served in WWII? I think there are a lot of things we don’t know about this wonderful man who has been making us smile for years. Listen to the show and know him better.
Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Maggie Peterson part2.

I love it when listeners help me find great content for the podcast and this episode is exactly that. Randy Bewer sent me an e-mail with a link to a story from the May 7, 1961 edition of The Milwaukee Sentinel titled, McNear: Barber Who ‘Cuts Up’ and it was gold.
I’ve been involved with The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) for going on 30 years and I had never seen nor heard about this article by United Press International writer J.A. Amant. I hope you enjoy this little nugget even half as much as I did when I first read it. It’s kind of like finding a lost bit of history.
You’ll also get to hear a little about the 2014 Mayberry Meet-up held in Mt. Airy in July. A fun time was had by all and I encourage you to get out there and visit with your friends and family….turn them in the Mayberry fans if you can.

I was reviewing my archive of hard copy versions of The Bullet and found a jewel in the June 1, 1992 issue. There’s a story in there by Jim Clark titled “Howard McNear – The Many Parts of Floyd the Barber” and it is a treasure!
On this episode of Two Chairs, I’ll read most of this wonderful focus on Howard McNear to you and I know you’re going to enjoy it. If you enjoy it as much as I think you may, y0u can purchase a copy of the full version for yourself over at Weaver’s.
Enjoy learning more about America’s favorite barber. “Everything’s okay in Mayberry.”

As you can tell by the name of this episode, we’ll be hearing about “The Andy Griffith Show starring Andy Griffith; with Ronny Howard, Carl Griffith. Also starring, Don Knotts.” Well, the announcer didn’t say that but I’m sure Andy would have liked it if he had.
In the episode “The Farmer Takes a Wife” guest staring the Skipper himself, Alan Hale Jr., as Jeff Pruitt we see Carl Griffith. Listen to this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting to find exactly who Carl is and where in the episode he appears.

The Mayberry Historical Society – The Mayberry Historical Society invites the Mayberry community on the web to to create a history of town and county of Mayberry.
For the last three episodes I’ve been talking about our Mayberry friends being on the Old Time Radio program, Gunsmoke. Parley Baer and Howard McNear were stars of Gunsmoke on the radio but other residents of Mayberry frequented Dodge City as well.
In this episode, we’ll hear a few clips from an episode of Gunsmoke called “Cow Doctor.” Listen to see if you can pick out the actors.
Tell those Mayberry folks in your life about these episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting.
