This is the fourth episode of Two Chairs focusing on the 1998 Mayberry gathering in Kingsport, TN. If you have missed the previous episodes you should go back and check them out by using the link in the notes below.

The event was called “I Remember Mayberry” and in this episode we hear from Jean Carson. Jean was Daphne the “Fun Girl” from Mt. Pilot as well as Naomi Connors, the convicted husband beater from the episode “Convicts at Large.” You’ll get to see/hear her in both roles.

I want to once again encourage you to watch the video version of this episode because you’ll be able to see Jean rather thank hear her, only. While you’re watching, be sure to like and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

David “The Mayberry Deputy” Browning was the emcee for the evening and he’ll be introducing Jean in the first clip.

We’ll try our hand a few trivia questions for some fun.

This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Bruce Bilson” part 2.

There are characters that appeared in Mayberry that we all remember so well that we assume they were often on the show. I’ve been amazed, when I started looking, at how few times some of our favorites actually visited Mayberry. Ernest T. Bass was only on five episodes. Briscoe Darling was only on six and the subject of this episode was only on four with only three of them being as Daphne.

Jean Carson not only played Daphne beside Joyce Jameson’s “Skippy” but only 5 episodes after her first appearance as Daphne in “Barney Mends a Broken Heart” she was back in Mayberry as husband beater “Naomi Connors” in “Convicts at Large.”

After we talk a bit about Jean we’ll have a few trivia questions to have fun with and then hear from Randy. This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Sheldon Leonard” Part 3.

This week is the conclusion of our recording from the 1994 Mayberry Squad Car Rendezvous (I mistakenly said 1993 during the podcast). Counting last weeks episode, we have almost an hour of interviews with Howard Morris, Betty Lynn, and Jean Carson for you to enjoy.  If you haven’t listened to last weeks podcast be sure to go back and give it a listen but you don’t have to listen to them in order.

If you enjoy the interviews, you might want to actually watch the video version of the episodes to be able to see these wonderful stars and feel even more like you were there.  The videos are in the show notes or you can go to our YouTube channel to enjoy the fun.

Below is a list of the questions you’ll hear addressed on this episode.

  • Did any of you get to visit with Hal Smith “Otis” before he passed?
  • When the Darlings played music on the show, was it live?
  • Howard, can you name the bodies of water?
  • How much input did Andy have on the characterization of the parts?
  • Do Daphne and Thelma Lou know how to sew up their fingers like Goober?
  • Howard, do you have a burning desire for Charlene?
  • Barney and Andy finally got mad at the Fun Girls, you said……
  • How did you keep getting out of jail?
  • Do you stay in touch with Joyce Jameson?
  • How many hours a day did you have to rehearse to do a half hour show?
  • Jean, how often do you go back to West Virginia?
  • What was is like to work with Howard “Floyd” McNear?
  • Howard talks about what being on “live” television means.
  • Has there ever been any talk about making a new series of Mayberry?
  • Did any of you take acting lessons?
  • Did you have any idea at the time that you were working on a television classic?
  • What caused the changes in the show after the first season?
  • Betty, on Return to Mayberry there was a scene with Jim Nabors singing that was cut. Why?
  • What can we do about networks/stations cutting parts of the show out for more commercials?
  • Did you do any of the sponsor shots during the series?
  • It’s me, it’s me…it’s Ernest T.

I’ve been going through my old 8mm video tapes and ran across the 1994 Mayberry Squad Car Rendezvous (I mistakenly said 1993 during the podcast).  Finding things like this is like Christmas coming early because this video has almost an hour of interviews with Howard Morris, Betty Lynn, and Jean Carson that, unless you were there, most Mayberry fans will never have heard.

It’s always fun to find things like this to share with you because it’s original content you won’t get anywhere else.  This is part 1 of 2.  Below is a list of the questions you’ll hear addressed on this episode.

  • Favorite Episode?
  • What was Aunt Bee like?
  • Do you ever see/talk to Andy?
  • Howard, how were you chosen to be on The Show of Shows?
  • Do you know Mr. Schwamp’s real name? (Nobody knows his name.)
  • Does Howard have kids/grandkids as wiry as he is?
  • Why did Thelma Lou love Barney?
  • What did Daphnie think about Andy/what attracted her to Andy?
  • Did Richard Linke’s wife play parts on TAGS? (The cast didn’t know but she wasn’t on the show.)
  • Howard, were you a director or an actor first? What did you direct?
  • Do you ever run into the “Darling” clan?
  • Did you enjoy making Return to Mayberry?
  • How is Don Knotts health?
  • Betty, what was Thelma Lou’s occupation?
  • Barney can’t sing….
  • Tim Allen was on an award show and thanked Howard Morris, was that you?
  • Betty, did you ever have a relationship with Don Knotts outside the set?
  • Howard, were you married at the time the shows were being produced?
  • Do you three watch the old episodes?
  • Jean, which role did you like the best? Fun Girl or escaped convict?
  • What’s your favorite episode?
  • Is your personality similar to the character on the show?
  • Did Andy ever ask any of you to be on Matlock?
  • Any contact with Jim Nabors?
  • When Jeff Pruitt came to town looking for a wife we saw a different side of Barney.
  • Could Howard Morris do Ole Aunt Maria?
  • Did you do much improvising during the shows or stay with the script?

We’ve spent the last several weeks talking about Lum and Abner so I thought it was time to dive into a Mayberry trivial trivialities session.

I’m sure you’ve enjoyed the episode “Convicts at Large” (episode #74 from 1962/12/10) with Big Maude Tyler, Sally and convicted husband beater Naomi Connors.  In that episode, after Barney had been dancing for a while with Sally, a song began to play and Naomi got so upset that she hit Floyd over the head with a vase.

In this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting, we’ll learn the name of the song and a few more trivialities about it.  Can you guess what we hear on “My Fair Ernest T. Bass” (episode #112 from 1964/02/03) at about 20:10 minutes into the episode?  We’ll, if you haven’t figured it out you will certainly know after to hear this episode of Two Chairs.

Jean “Hello Doll” Carson was born February 28, 1923 and had a wonderful career. On this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting we’ll remember Jean’s visits to Mayberry as well as talk about just a few of things she did outside of Mayberry.

Jean passed away on November 2, 2005 but her “hello doll” will always bring a smile to fans of The Andy Griffith Show.  Her son, Tracy Alexander, owns operates Alexander Productions in Palm Springs, CA and has been active in keeping his mom’s memory alive and well.

Two Chairs No Waiting 80: Plan for Escape

Two Chairs No Waiting

A gem of a find with Mayberry’s own fun girl Jean “Hello Doll” Carson (TCNW #66: Jean Carson Interview) as the focus.

In answer to a request by caller Kyle heard in TCNW #78, I was looking around for other work our Mayberry friends did outside of The Andy Griffith Show and I found “Plan for Escape” (November 17, 1952).

“Plan for Escape” was an episode of the CBS-TV anthology series Studio One (a.k.a. Westinghouse Studio One in honor of the sponsor of the show). The story is a damsel-in-distress type gangster story and is basically a play filmed live.  Jean plays Mary Warren who is a cocktail-lounge singer.

I thought you might like hearing Mayberry’s Daphnie sing as well as a bit of the dialog. The song is “I Only Saw Him Once” by Joan Whitney/Alex Kramer.
