I was doing some cleanup around the house during the holidays and ran across a story from March 2006 about a Mayberry Variety Show that was going to occur on April 21, 2006. It was going to be connected with the induction of Jim “Gomer Pyle” Nabors into the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame to be held on April 22, 2006.

What great memories this event brought back so I wanted to share at least some of them with you.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Frank Ferguson” part 2.

TCNW 455: Remembering Jim Nabors

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:27:56

The last couple of weeks have been hard for the Mayberry family with the passing of two Mayberry greats. First we lost Rance Howard and now our beloved Jim Nabors. Mayberry fans join Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. fans and so many others in our sadness over the passing of Jim Nabors. In this episode of Two Chairs, we’ll do our best to honor the memory of that baseball cap wearing gas station attendant from Mayberry.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Richard Crenna.

When I started this podcast, the main reason was to release the interviews I had done with cast members of The Andy Griffith Show back in the late 1990’s.  This interview with Jim Nabors is the last of those interviews.  I had been keeping this one in my pocket for a special occasion and finally thought it was time.  Jim Nabors performed “Back Home Again in Indiana” his past weekend for the final time at the Indianapolis 500 after having begun the tradition of him singing it back in 1972.  That seems like a special occasion to me.

This interview was done on September 5, 1998 at Governor’s Palace in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.  My wife and I were able to arrange to go back stage before his performance to get this interview.  It was a wonderful experience and he put us at ease right off the bat.

I know you’re going to enjoy it.

James Best, known to Mayberry fans as guitar player Jim Lindsey and to fans around the world as Rosco P. Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazzard, is up to something special.  He’s making a movie.  Not just any movie but one that I’m sure that Goober Pyle would love.  After all, he watched “The Monster That Ate Minnesota” ten times!

I’m sure that means Goober watched “The Killer Shrews” (1959) at least a few times while it was playing at the Mayberry Grand.  That can only mean that James’ newest production is going to be high up on Goob’s must see list.  It’s name, “Return of the Killer Shrews.” That’s right, shooting on the sequel begins in June 2011!

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Back in 1972, while visiting the Indy 500 race with some friends, Jim Nabors was asked to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana.”  He didn’t really even know the song and it was only minutes before he was to sing it as part of the opening ceremonies. In the time since, Jim has only missed singing the song to start the race about 6 times.

Two Chairs No Waiting researcher, Mike Peacock, found this interview with Jim Nabors and was able to provide permission to use the audio.  You’ll get to hear Jim tell about singing at the race and how it all got started.  Interviewer Ed Wenck of 93 WIBC was able to speak with Mr. Nabors recently. Enjoy the interview.
