Let’s have a fun time visiting and celebrating the 200th episode of Two Chairs No Waiting!  What better way to have fun than to talk about Ernest T. Bass and his song “Old Aunt Maria.”

We find out where the words to the song came from and what the original name was before it became “Old Aunt Maria.”

Thank you all for being part of 200 episodes of the podcast.  There is so much Mayberry in this world if we just keep looking for it.  Go out there and share the spirit of love which is the real spirit of Mayberry.

Two Chairs No WaitingThere was so much information about the connections between Mayberry and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (TGAMC) that it took two episodes of the podcast to cover it all and part 2 is one of the longest episodes ever of Two Chairs No Waiting to fit it all in.

There are about 19 TAGS/TGAMC connections that our crack research staff..okay it was just me but it sounds better to say it was a staff…was able to find.

I hope you’ll enjoy audio clips from TGAMC and the loads of Mayberry fun in this episode of the podcast.

Two Chairs No WaitingSet in Rachel Kansas, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of my favorite Don Knotts movies.  That could be because so many folks from Mayberry showed up in this, Mr. Knotts first movie after leaving The Andy Griffith Show.

The first is, of course, Don Knotts as Luther Heggs but lets start of with the behinds the scenes folk.  The Ghost and Mr. Chicken was written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum.  Andy Griffith also helped re-write the script but is uncredited for his efforts.

That is only the beginning of the connections and fun trivia related to Mayberry and Don Knotts first movie following The Andy Griffith Show.  Turns out there was so much that this will be the first of two episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting that we’ll do on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

Two Chairs No Waiting

An important person very much connected to The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS) passed away on January 30, 2010 and I couldn’t let another week pass by without mentioning his passing. So, rather than this episode simply being part three of our remembering Howard McNear we are going to also remember Aaron Ruben.

Aaron Ruben was producer, story consultant, writer, and director and one of TAGS strongest pillars for the first five seasons. Jim Clark, Presiding Goober of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC), said this about Aaron. “Other than Andy Griffith himself, no one was more crucial behind the scenes in guiding and shaping ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ during its first five seasons.”

Mr. Ruben will be missed and fondly remembered.

Parley Baer joins us once again to share his memories of Howard McNear and his experience performing the eulogy at Howard’s funeral.  Smiles and laughter were shared that day remembering Howard and you can hear the love in Parley’s voice as he tells the story.

Tell those Mayberry folks in your life about these episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting.

Do you remember the story about Myray Lambert?  No…not Myra Koontz, that’s a completely different story.  I’m talking about the “news” Opie and Howie were sharing in the original version of “The Mayberry Sun.”

Frequent listeners will remember that in episode #36 of Two Chairs No Waiting we were discussing “the bomb” comment made in on TAGS episode “Opie’s Newspaper.” (Feel free to pause and go back to give#36 a listen if you missed it.)

While researching that comment, I was re-reading Neal Brower‘s wonderful book Mayberry 101 and ran across a nice insight for fan of The Andy Griffith Show and thought it was something you’d want to know or be reminded of if you have Neal’s book.

The quote I read is found on page 427 Mayberry 101: Behind The Scenes of a TV Classic by Neal Brower | John F. Blair publisher

Q. Were there any TAGS scripts which were written but never filmed?

A. Yes .Paul, I wrote one ..( I don’t know if other writers wrote any.) Our unfilmed episode was THE WANDERING MINSTREL, which I wrote with Ray Allen Saffian for the 1962-1963 season.. It featured a charming footloose guitar player we called “Wally Jordan.” ( based on an actual musician Andy had great respect for, Brownie Mcghee)

Andy had constantly spoken in praise of Brownie, so it was inevitable someone would write the story. We wrote the outline and then the fully completed script. Now the weird part. To this day nobody on TAGS can give a reason why it wasn’t filmed. It’s still a mystery.

If you’d like to read the script, it is printed in its entirety in Richard Kelly’s seminal book THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW .. Pickled Tink to hear from you. Harvey B

In the episode Opie’s Newspaper when Barney mentions “It must be the bomb,” did you ever wonder what he meant?  We’ll we’re gonna find out on this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting.

For those that don’t remember, Opie’s Newspape is where Opie takes his cue from the adults and spices up a penny newspaper he and his friend Howie publish with gossip he’s overheard. When Barney and the Taylors get a look at the new issue, they have to scramble to collect the copies before they are read by the rest of the town.

In the episode, Opie delivers the first edition of the “Mayberry Sun” to Andy and then to Barney at the courthouse.  Opie reports that he’s having a hard time selling his paper so Barney and Andy try to help by telling him he needs to branch out in his coverage.  Opie & Howie do just that and figure that the adults in town seem to enjoy the “Mayberry After Mid-night” section of the paper the most and set out to make their paper have that type content.

Just after Opie and Howie finish the first run of their revised paper, Opie delivers copies to Barney, Andy, and Aunt Bee in the Taylor’s kitchen at breakfast time.  Opie leaves them with the paper and goes out to place free copies in everyone in Mayberry’s hands or, in most cases, front porch.

The “It must be the bomb” comment comes while they are reflecting on the heat.

I started out preparing to make an entire episode about TAGS writer Harvey Bullock but became side tracked by watching the “Aunt Bee’s Romance” TAGS episode looking for a sound clip “Did I tell you what the mirror said to the dresser?” Harvey answers that question for us and and then I drifted off into talking about other great quotes from “Aunt Bee’s Romance.”

I hope you enjoy visiting with me in Mayberry as much as I enjoy talking about the people of Mayberry.

Please let me know what YOUR favorite quotes from TAGS are and hopefully a future episode will be able to feature some of those quotes.

Thank you for listening and please remember…..
