Two Chairs No Waiting

Who is the Mayberry Mystery Man? That’s a question that has been on the minds of fans for years and, like any good mystery, still keeps them guessing.

Mr. Schwamp, also known as Mr. Schwump by some, is the older dark haired man you often see sitting on the bench outside the barbershop or in groups of people in Mayberry.

Over the years, every cast and crew member of The Andy Griffith Show has been asked if they know the name of the actor who played Mr. Schwamp. While all of them remember him, none of them knows his real name.

Time has passed us by with so much to do and so forth, but If someone could have had the chance to talk to Ruth Burch, casting director, before she passed, she may have possibly remembered. However, if he was truely a casual background actor or “extra” which is probably the case we may never know. It is very interesting and unusal that he would have been mentioned on screen by name!

Wonder if the payroll records still exist for Desilu from those 26 episodes? If one could research these for these 26 episodes his name would have been consistant among the list of extras
