Hearing George Lindsey speak of appearing on Gunsmoke reminded me of one of my favorite episodes, "Mad Dog", which featured TAGS cast members George, Hoke Howell and Denver Pyle. George's performance as one of the mean Watson boys, Pinto, was absolutely brilliant. But of course he will forever be "Goober" to me first and foremost. He added so much personality and humor to every show he appeared in. Thanks for all the laughs, "Goob".

I've known about Lurene Tuttle for a number of years. Among her film credits were two Marilyn Monroe movies, "Don't Bother to Knock" and "Niagara." She also had a part in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." I enjoyed the podcast on her, Allan.

I was just thinking about Pod Cast 181 where you asked "What are you doing to spread the word about Mayberry and and all things related?" Since I have a closet full of TAGS related shirts I put one on every time I go out in public. Its amazing how many folks stop me and comment on my shirt.Since they initiated the conversation it gives me a perfect opening to talk about the show in general, the Pod Casts,Mayberry Days , and all of the web sites related to Mayberry.I have one shirt that I only wear to Mayberry Days because the general public does not get its meaning. It simply says "Call The Man."

I'll have to check that I didn't know that Don Knotts was in Scooby Doo. It's amazing how they made a character that looks just like Don Knotts and you said that he played a deputy in 1 of the episodes and that ties it all back to TAGS. Really Interesting, I first heard about Don Knotts and Scooby Doo during the after show of one of the podcasts in the chatroom and its just fenominal and you showed the gang in the chatroom pictures of Don Knotts as Scooby Doo and so just today I listened to the Scooby Doo episode and I really hope Youtube or Netflix has one of those Scooby Doo episodes with Don Knotts so I am going to go look for that. By the way did Frank ever call back in about his question?

What a timeless movie. Having so many Mayberry connections makes it that much more timeless. It answers the question some of us have always wondered. What if Barney Fife got his own movie ? I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a restored blu ray version in 5.1, because the music is so great. Would love to see some bonus material also. That interview with Don Knotts would go great with it.

@Romeena It was certainly a wonderful time on the Mayberry Cruise. It is special that we're able to do a Bible study on the cruise and have so many people attend at an 8am time slot on a cruise. Ronnie and Elease did a great job, added some Mayberry fun, and caused introspection as well with their skit.

That you for taking the time to listen to the podcast and for commenting.

Hey, Allan...

It was great fun to listen to this podcast, and remember back to the cruise last year, when this was recorded. I could just picture Barney and Thelma Lou doing their dialogue, and of course, that brought back memories of the hilarious antics of Ernest T. as well. What fun we had.

Thanks for doing these - I hope others will join in and listen. There's much to learn, and it speaks so well to that bit of Mayberry that we all carry around in our hearts.

Allan, I love good, old-fashioned porch sitting, just as it was done in Mayberry. Unfortunately, I have neither a front nor back porch for sitting and tend to gaze longingly at homes I see with nice, big porches. Just the other day, we drove past a large, old, well-kept house here in town, and my husband (who is well aware of my penchant for porches) pointed out the beautiful porch complete with comfortable-looking outdoor furniture. I said, "Yes, and look--it even has ceiling fans!" Well, maybe someday I will have a lovely sitting porch of my own.

In the meantime, I do have a porch memory to share. This one is from only a couple of years ago. My daughter and I had made a new friend. She lived down the road from my parents, who are country dwellers. During one of our visits to the farm, I was taking a walk, and my daughter was riding her bike with me. We passed a charming little house at the foot of a small hill, tucked in a cluster of trees. I knew that this house had recently sold and wondered who the new owners were. As we drew near, I saw a lady out in the yard weeding some flowers. I offered a friendly hello to her as I passed. She responded, so I stopped and we chatted for awhile. I took an instant liking to her, as did my daughter, so the next time we visited my folks and went for a walk, we dropped by to see her again. She was in the middle of something but asked if we'd stop on our way back from our walk, and we did. By that time, it was early evening, and the summer sun was hanging low in the western sky. My new friend invited us onto her porch, a nice sitting porch with two, large, comfortable rocking chairs and a rustic table between. She went in the house and shortly came out with glasses of peach iced tea. We leisurely rocked and sipped tea and got to know one another while my daughter romped with the family dog. We laughed and talked until the sun started to slip below the horizon and the sky took on a soft, pastel hue. Then it was time to go. But we returned for more visits whenever we were at the farm. Unfortunately, my friend and her husband moved a few states away the following year to pursue a job opportunity. But we stay in touch through e-mail. The last time I e-mailed her, which was rather recently, I mentioned that every time I make peach tea, I relive that warm summer evening on her porch. I think peach tea will prompt that sweet memory for a long time to come.

The house has a new owner now. We haven't had the opportunity yet to meet her. But if that time ever comes, I hope she'll invite us to sit on the porch once more in the rockers that my friend left behind. And perhaps one day I'll have the porch of my dreams. If so, I'll be on the lookout for a friendly passerby to invite to come on up and "sit a spell," and I'll anticipate pleasant memories yet to be made.

Hi Allan!
Thanks very much for this well-deserved 2-parter of this excellent movie!
I've enjoyed listening (and re-listening) to it.
All of those familiar Mayberry folks and connections have long interested me, and I learned of quite a few here I didn't know of, before! I wonder if part of the answer to that great scripting lies in director Alan Rafkin, who also worked on the Andy Griffith Show?
I grew up watching this movie, and in fact, I think I first knew Don Knotts as Luther Heggs, coming to know him as Barney later in reruns.
Composer Vic Mizzy conducted the orchestra, playing his score, but he had to take over and play the trademark scary organ music himself, as no one in the orchestra could play it in that "goofy/spooky" way that he envisioned. Mizzy also helped to pioneer the use of fuzz guitar in orchestras and soundtracks, as well, and "The Ghost.." has some if you listen carefully.
Also, here are some additional links:
This is about a tribute night held in 2009 in New York City, in which Joan Staley (who played Luther's girlfriend/wife Alma) and Al Checco (who played the uncredited Gaylord Patty(sp?)) appeared. Al was a lifelong friend of Don's and he appeared at least in one episode of The Andy Griffith Show ("If I Had A Quarter Million", playing the bad guy who puts knock out drops in Barney's glass of milk). Here's the link to that tribute writeup, with interesting recollections by the cast:

It's amazing that "["The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"] was "made quickly on a 17-day shooting schedule."!
Also invaluable is this wonderful (long) interview of Mr. Knotts from 1999:
http://www.emmytvlegends.org/interviews/people/don-knotts
Finally, there are several Vic Mizzy soundtracks available:
"Suites and Themes" (compilation from various Mizzy soundtracks)
"The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" (original score and incidental music - very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
"The Reluctant Astronaut" (original score and incidental music - very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
"The Shakiest Gun In The West"(original score and incidental music - very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
Extra tracks are included on some, including vintage trailers and radio spots for the movies. There are still copies left, from what I've seen, although the record company is out of business. Interestingly enough, when these movies were originally released, no album soundtrack was released at all, up until 2001-2003, when these were originally released. "The Shakiest Gun In The West" is in a limited edition of only 5000, by the way. Here's the website:

Thanks again for all of the hard work, Allan!

Hi Allan!
Thanks very much for this well-deserved 2-parter of this excellent movie!
I’ve enjoyed listening (and re-listening) to it.
All of those familiar Mayberry folks and connections have long interested me, and I learned of quite a few here I didn’t know of, before! I wonder if part of the answer to that great scripting lies in director Alan Rafkin, who also worked on the Andy Griffith Show?
I grew up watching this movie, and in fact, I think I first knew Don Knotts as Luther Heggs, coming to know him as Barney later in reruns.
Composer Vic Mizzy conducted the orchestra, playing his score, but he had to take over and play the trademark scary organ music himself, as no one in the orchestra could play it in that “goofy/spooky” way that he envisioned. Mizzy also helped to pioneer the use of fuzz guitar in orchestras and soundtracks, as well, and “The Ghost..” has some if you listen carefully.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is my favorite Don Knotts movie. He is Barney Fife to the core in his character.. Luther Heggs. We have the movie on DVD and watch it every Halloween (which is also my Birthday)! Our local old restored movie theater also normally shows it sometime during October each year and it is nice to get to watch it again on a big scrren where I saw it for the first time as a child.

Loved the podcast tonight, Allan. Very enjoyable ! The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of my favorite movies and the music is great. I didn't realize how many Mayberry connections were involved until you pointed them out. Guess that's what made the movie so special.

Alan, thank you so much for the podcast on "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken". It is my favorite movie of all time. I agree with Janet. It is a family-oriented movie with lots of TAGS alumni and spooky fun. I think the music that Vic Mizzy wrote really set the mood too. Looking forward to next week's podcast !

Really enjoyed the podcast on "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken," Allan. I look forward to the continuation next week. It's one of my favorite movies -- lots of fun! All the TAGS connections just make it better. I have the "Reluctant Hero" pack, and it's good, though I agree with you about "The Love God." Because of the Hugh Heffner-type theme, I won't even let my daughter (who is twelve) watch it. But the others are all fun movies and appropriate for the whole family. About the house used in the film, it's interesting how the same house can project a completely different atmosphere as a result of how it is lit and how the set is constructed. I guess that is the "actor of the house"! ;-)

I didn't even notice that Mr. Dodson didn't seem to have his mustache on Happy Days. I'll try and find a few more screen shots of the Happy Days episode so we can see better to be sure it is missing. Good eye!

I enjoyed learning more about Jack Dodson in this podcast, Allan. I went to the Facebook page to view the pictures better. The photo of Jack in the T-shirt shows that he was pretty thin in his army days! (Reminds me of the episode where Barney visits the new doctor in town and sits in his T-shirt to be examined. Well, okay, Jack wasn't as thin as Don Knotts -- not many people are!) In the one photo of Jack in the "Happy Days" episode, it appeared as though he didn't have his customary mustache. Is that correct? Or perhaps it had turned gray and just wasn't as obvious. I thought it was interesting that he had his mustache as far back as the '50s, so I'm assuming he had it most of his adult life.

Hey Jerry,
Thank you for listening to the podcast and thank you for writing. Believe me, the work on all the Mayberry websites, mailing lists, and podcasts is a labor of love. You should try and make it to Mayberry Days sometime. It's something EVERY fan of The Andy Griffith Show should try and do at least one time. If you do it once...you'll keep going back.

Hello Allen, Sent a note to you last week but not sure you received it, so I'm sending another to be on the safe side. My name is jerry wilson from Ft. Laud Fl. I came upon your Two Chairs Podcast shows about three weeks ago. Thank you for all the hard work you do to put those shows together, they are VERY entertaining. I listen to them while my wife and I do our one mile walk every other night. I've been a fan of The Andy Griffith show for many, many years. I usually watch at least two a day, sometimes i just like to have it on in the background. It reminds me of my younger days, hearing the fishing hole song. I just finshed podcast number 68 today (gunsmoke) looking forward to all of the shows. I have been to Mt Airy but not for Mayberry Days, would love to do that someday. Just wanted to say Thanks again for all you do and I'm glad I found you. You have a mayberry friend in south Florida. Jerry..

Allan, thanks for your excellent podcasts! It was great seeing you do 'double duty' with your wife this time. Do you really sing that song all the time? Thanks for sharing it again!
I couldn't hear your wife that well....did she get Barney's special vocal microphone? :-)

Allan, I so much enjoyed your podcast of Betty Lynn, she is the sweetest and down to earth Lady. As you know my wife is a Thelma Lou impersonator and Betty Lynn asks my wife every year, that she sees her, if she is still impersonating her. And my wife is very honored to do so. I wish all actors were as sweet as Betty Lynn!!

Allan, my parents have subscribed to Guideposts for many years, and I remember reading that article by Andy when it came out. It's interesting on two levels -- it tells us something of Andy Griffith's faith in the Lord, and it also opens a window onto the life of a very private man, revealing things that we might otherwise not have known.

Now, this reminds me of something else. I've been waiting for Andy's autobiography to come out, as have many others. I suppose if you had any information about that, you would have shared it on the digest, but I'll take this opportunity to ask anyway. Do you know why the book has not been released on schedule and when we might expect it to be available?

Thanks, Allan. I really enjoyed the podcast.

Hi Allan,
So glad to hear you are starting a podcast bible study. Many of the churches we visit during the year tell us that they have done the Mayberry bible study. If we look around enough we can find the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Mayberry morals have a lot in common. God Bless !! And like I end all my programs I ask" What in the world are we going to do with sin? And the audience hollers out. NIP IT IN THE BUD!!

Alan, I was at the Snappy Lunch twice in the last week, and they have aquired the ORIGINAL menu sign of the Snappy BEFORE Charles bought the place. I don't have all the details, but I guess it was in someone's basement and they found it and brought it in. The sign is in great shape (a cheese sandwich is 10 cents, but a hamburger is 5 cents..... Makes ya think) and would make a lovely snippet for your podcast sometime.....

Thank you so much for the Grascals interview. I purchased the album off of iTunes as soon as I was able. I took that album, some selected Dillards tunes and Andy Griffith's American Originals album and made an Andy Griffith playlist for my iPod. My daughter 7 and son 3, love it. That's all they want to listen to. Favorites are Boy Giraffes are Selfish, Flop Eared Mule, Cindy, Dooley, and Stay All Night. The kids especially love the one's they can dance to. Even our black lab Henry joins in and "sings" along to the Andy Griffith Show theme song. Just thought I'd share one way in which my family shares the Mayberry spirit. Thanks for all the work you do in that regard.

Peace,
Chris

Allan, I am curious -- was the recording you used in the podcast of Jim Nabors singing "Back Home Again" from this year or from another year? If it was from this year, then his voice is remarkably strong for someone his age.

As far as Andy Devine, I was just talking to the President of the National Lum and Abner Society, "Uncle" Donald Pitchford yesterday about Andy Devine and his connection with Lum and Abner...

I had heard of Opie Cates before this last week but knew little about him. Interesting stuff!

I was listening to the Opie name podcast . Then the name Andy Devine came up you said he played in some old westerns- I remember him as Jingles the sidekick of Wild Bill Hickok a weekly TV series that was sponsored by Kellogg's Sugar Pops . This was probably in the late 1950's . Guess that tells my age. It was neat hearing his voice and remembering . Love you keep it up

<blockquote>Bruce,

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems downloading that episode. I just played it on the site and downloaded it directly. I downloaded it with iTunes when it came out so that is working as well.

I'm sending a copy of the file to you by e-mail.

Allan, this question has to do with last week's episode, "Return to Myers Lake." As I was watching one of the episodes on my 50th anniversary set of TAGS last night, I noticed something. During the original end credits showing Andy and Opie getting their fish and preparing to leave the lake, you can see a white building in the background at the other end of the lake. I tried to zoom in, but it was too fuzzy to see much detail. Anyway, I am wondering if this is the game warden's house or another building. Do you know? I tried looking at your photo of the game warden's house but couldn't tell if they were the same. This is the only time I can recall actually seeing a building included in any shot of Myers Lake on the show. I wondered if you could satisfy my curiosity. Thanks!

Allan, you mentioned about that rock and speculated that it might be the rock that Opie threw into the lake. Well, I know how you can find out. Send it to the boys at the lab! They can analyze the rock chemically to determine its origin -- that is, if somebody brought the rock in, or if it's a local rock. If the rock hasn't been handled too much, they might still be able to find Opie's fingerprints on it. Wouldn't that be great? Let us know what you find out!

Was there in '06. Nice museum in the area too. One of the reasons the lake seems smaller is they reduced the water level years ago to minimize the chance of flooding the canyon below.

Finally made it there! I had a brief opportunity while on a business trip, and so I headed up there (thanks to Allan's excellent directions and inspired by his photos). While there was a lot of activity due to the filming of some picture (I didn't see Andy anywhere), they let me drive around the lake. They didn't, however, let me get out of the car. So, I guess I'm going to have to try again someday. All of that being said, I did see things that were familiar, and I had a great time. Thanks, Allan, for the directions and the inspiration.

While watching Podcast 121 I was reminded about a question I have had in the back of my mind for some time. Did Don Knotts really play the harmonica or was he faking it like Jim Best? The show indicated that he did indeed play music with Dr. Ferrara but never stated what instruments he played.

Hi Allan- Really enjoyed your interview with Al Gandolfi. I remember with much pleasure all our time together in Cocoa for the Good Ole Days event. And I know how hard Al worked to get that event working so very well. I'll never forget being the Grand Marshall of the parade. Or the spaghetti dinner.

Thanks for the memories.

Speaking about Mountain people, here are a couple of observations from A Feud Is A Feud. Watch closely as Andy unloads Wakefield and Carters shotguns so they wont accidentally shoot each other as they duel. When Andy hands their guns back he switches the guns and they each get the wrong gun back. Secondly, when Andy goes to Wakefield's house to find out what started the feud, what was on Wakefield's Beagles head? You have to watch closely, it's in the frame where they show the dog for the last time.

Answer: It's a fly.

<blockquote><strong>From Allan:</strong> Thanks for writing in, Richard. I'll be watching for that fly next time I watch that episode. I had noticed the shotgun switch but I bet others hadn't and it would make a good thing to mention on the show. Thanks for reminding me of it!</blockquote>

This is the first time I've seen your podcast. Great job. It's good to know that there are others who love Andy Griffith. I never realized that Ernest T Bass went on to direct a movie I just watched, "With Six you Get Eggroll".

Thanks for all the research you've put in to this. I'll be watching! (Also, I'll head over to iTunes and give you a shout out there.)

Early Gilley's name was used a couple of times; There are STILL at least a couple of Early Gilleys in Surry County. I'm guessing that was someone Andy knew grewing up.

<blockquote><strong>From Allan:</strong> Daddy, you are soooo right. I've met several generations of Earlie Gilleys when at Mayberry Days. Earlie, the original (there's a Jr. and several other numbers), was married to Andy's first cousin Lorraine Beasley Gilley. Both Earlie and Lorraine will be remembered by Mayberry fans from their several mentions on TAGS.</blockquote>

Allan, I enjoyed the podcast as usual, and just wanted to say that I appreciated Paul Mulik's contribution to this week's episode. (Paul always has interesting things to share!) I also like his idea of devoting a future podcast to all the times real-life names were mentioned on TAGS. I like that kind of behind-the-scenes information relating to the actors' personal lives. Hope you can pull that together!

<blockquote><strong>From Allan:</strong> Hey Janet! I'm with you, I always enjoy it when Paul calls or writes in. He's a fountain of Mayberry knowledge.</blockquote>

Allan - great topic! I think I always assumed that somehow, no one else in town could use the phone while they were on their long distance call. That is what is implied in the show. I love how it prompts Mr Tucker's speech about "you are living in another world!....).

And I LOVE that episode! So many great moments in that one episode. Here's one we have used for years - "oh boy, i get to sleep on an ironing board between 2 chairs. That sounds awful. No it isn't "THAT'S ADVENTURE SLEEPING". That line has been on more camping trips than I can count!

Hi Allan, I really enjoyed the pod cast on giraffes are selfish, I especially enjoyed the Mayberry Christmas poem. You also mentioned Barney's book learn a month, Barney talks about that there are as many stars in the sky as there is sand on the sea. Remember God told Moses that his seed would be as the stars in the sky and as the sands of the sea. So I believe that statement is very true. So that proves that the show is not only funny but educational!!

Allan, that is pretty odd that another Allan Newsome would be known for his knowledge of the dingo dog! That's a great quote by Floyd, one of his classics. I've known about the dingo dog for a long time, but I think the only time I saw one in person was at Kentucky Down Under. Kentucky Down Under is located near Mammoth Cave and is an attraction that showcases Australia, especially the Outback. They have many animals on display, among them the dingo dog. Which reminds me -- did you know that the rock band Three Dog Night's name came from the Australian Aboriginal custom of sleeping with a dog at night for warmth? A really cold night required three dogs for enough warmth. I'm assuming these would be dingo dogs. Don't you think Floyd would enjoy knowing that bit of trivia?

Which reminds me — did you know that the rock band Three Dog Night’s name came from the Australian Aboriginal custom of sleeping with a dog at night for warmth? A really cold night required three dogs for enough warmth. I’m assuming these would be dingo dogs. Don’t you think Floyd would enjoy knowing that bit of trivia?

Gosh, I didn't have that experience either. I went on a Sunday with my girlfriend, and it was hardly busy at all. We walked around the lake and had a picnic and it was delightful. This was a few years ago, but I'll have to go back and see.

Great job on relating to everyone what a fun festival Mayberry Days is. I love talking with the impersonators, throwing lines from TAGS at them and watching them go into character. Everyone is in the Mayberry spirit and it is such a well organized event. And of course it is really special to get to meet some of the people that were part of TAGS. Already looking forward to next year!

I really enjoyed Andy's speech. I am confused why here he states that the show was based on Mount Airy, but I have heard other interviews where he said "those people like to think it was, but it wasn't." If anyone can clarify this I would appreciate it.

Hey Allan, your 100th episode was extra good! Good job on using the clip of Andy speaking in Mt. Airy to be the highlight of the show. And you sure did honor me by making my call a part of the show too. Here's a big "Atta Boy Luther!" to you for celebrating your centennial episode. You've gotta be prouder than a bug with 100 legs.

Thanks, Allan, for sharing with us the recording of Andy speaking at the statue dedication. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of it in the next few podcasts. I like all the podcasts, but I especially enjoy those that feature clips of the TAGS stars themselves speaking. Congratulations on your 100th episode!

Allen, very intresting information. One of my favorites. Being a sound engineer and keyboard musician in church, I have a tendancy to favor the episodes with music in them, not that I don't enjoy all the episodes. Hope to get to the Mayberry Days this year, my wife and I were able to attend last years for the first time, and loved every minute of it. Coming from Oklahoma takes a little planning though. Keep up the podcast, really enjoy your segments.

The script also includes a "singing commercial" for hog food that The Darlings were supposed to have recorded for the episode!

What a great podcast. That was the first time I have been able to see Floyd in person. You do such a great job. It was so good to see Bert again. I really thought he would have made an outstanding addition to the regular visitors to TAGS. Whoever did his voice certainly does have it down pat. I certainly can understand why you are such a popular person at Mayberry Days. Kudos for a great job as usual this week.

I just discovered this podcast recently and absolutely love it! I have learned so much more about Mayberry than ever before by listening to your weekly podcasts. Here in IL, there are not many people you can talk to about Mayberry (or at least where I live).

Now, I have two questions that have been troubling me.

1. In a season 3 episode of Gomer Pyle USMC, the episode where SGT Carter is sent to a recruiting both in Hollywood with a tag-along Gomer, there is a part where a security guard from the National Bank runs out of the bank after it is robbed. The guard surprisingly looks a lot like Barney: same uniform, same belt, same hat, same flashlight, same notepad, and the list goes on. :)
Anyway, I wanted to ask you about this to see who that man was and why, for some reason, he looked like Barney.

2. Referring to the Whistler Podcast, could it be possible that both Earl Hagen and Fred Lowery whistled the song together? Towards the ending of the TAGS theme song, only snapping and whistling is heard, but it seems as though, maybe, TWO whistles are heard. Am I going deaf or is there an overlap of two whistles there?

Thanks!

Anyway, I wanted to ask you about this to see who that man was and why, for some reason, he looked like Barney.

After several years of wanting to see "Myers Lake," I finally went down there today. Being about 90 miles from my house, and being a HUGE TAGS fan, not sure why it took me so long to get down there. I must say, I was very disappointed!!! The place was PACKED with people...none of which seemed to speak English. I realize the show was 40+ years ago but there really was not anything remotely recognizable. I "think" or "guess" we found the path where the opening footage was filmed...but I am not sure. There were about 30 Mexican people seemingly camped out there. I suppose the most interesting thing for me was the fact that the lake is so small!!! Not what I would imagine from the show. But I guess that is how everything is in Hollywood. Being the avid fan I am, I am glad I went there to at least say I have been there. Oh how I wish the "40 acres" were still around to peruse!!! My tip for anyone planning to go is to take a English/Spanish dictionary just in case!!!

Dear Mr. Burke, My husband John and I are avid fans of the Andy Griffith show and your pod cast. We love the Bedjacket episode but we have caught you in a blooper.Dabbs Greer was the sales clerk that Sold Andy the canning jars. He sold Opie the Salt and Pepper shakers. However Dabbs Greer is not the name of the actress who owned Lukens Style shop. Her name was Mary Lansing and she became Emmett's wife in the later episodes of the TAGS.

WE love your pod casts and are looking forward to the Loaded Goat when you do it. Thank you for your love of Mayberry and TAGS.Warmest regards John and Angela Miller.

Kevin,

The "Convicts at Large" episode is in my top 5 for sure. Floyd is just hilarious in this episode, at the top of his game! "If these hamburgers are burned, I'm not responsible!". "Barney, you're a good dancer!!". "Better watch it, Al." All CLASSIC lines!!

By the way, great job on your podcast. I listen to it every week. usually I'm mowing the lawn or pulling weeds about the time I hear it. I love when you thrown audio snippets from the show in there. We can all laugh together!

Thanks again,

I'm very sorry that Betty was robbed, and I don't mean to make light of her experience, but when I was listening to the audio of her describing it, and she said the man pushed her, I couldn't help but think about Floyd. In the episode where Andy was considering taking a job offer in Raleigh, Barney was spearheading an effort to get Andy to stay in Mayberry. As Floyd was telling Andy about the (fake) robbery in the barber shop, he said, "He pushed me. He pushed me real hard. He assaulted me." And, of course, the *way* Floyd says it is what makes it so funny. So when Betty said the man pushed her, I could just hear Floyd saying these lines.

I appreciated your bringing us the interview with Betty Lynn regarding her robbery. How sad that it should happen in Mt. Airy. Sad that it should happen anywhere. I wonder if the guy knew who she was. I would doubt it. It is always hard for me to see some of our beloved Mayberry folks in their twilight years of life. So few things every change in Mayberry so when I see the stars in real life time it comes as a shock and reality check regarding my own age.

Allan, I found it interesting that in the clip you played of Jean Carson talking to the other girl, she made a comment about how the girl grabbed at the first shiny thing that excited her. A similar comment was made by Andy Taylor in the episode that had Buddy Ebsen as a guest star. Buddy Ebsen's character was a drifter travelling through Mayberry and Barney was constantly trying to arrest him for loitering or vagrancy. Andy gave him some odd jobs to do around the house so Barney would leave him alone. However, the drifter was more interested in fishing than yard work, so he dropped the hedge clippers and went fishing. Opie then followed his lead and played hooky from school. When Andy confronted the drifter about Opie's behavior, the drifter said Opie should be allowed to choose his way to live or Andy's. Andy then explained that you can't let a child choose like that, that he would grab for the first shiny thing that comes along and only later would discover the hook in it. So when I heard the Jean Carson clip, it immediately reminded me of one of my favorite episodes. Thanks Allan, keep up the good work.

Hi Allan, I believe Andy has to take out his bankbook in the Episode "Keeper of the Flame". When it appears that Opie may have burned down a barn, Andy has to assume the responibility. He gets out his bankbook and tells barney, "Ain't the saddest bankbook you ever seen?".
