TCNW 517: Bruce Bilson 2015 Interview Part 1

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:36:03

Back in January 2016, Two Chairs had an amazing series of episode featuring Neal Brower’s interview with The Andy Griffith Show assistant director Bruce Bilson. That original interview was recorded during “Professor Brower’s Class” at Mayberry Days 2011. If you haven’t heard them, check them out starting with part 1 all the way through to part 4. (https://imayberry.com/podcasts/tag/bruce-bilson/)

Bruce Bilson was assistant director of “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960-62 (I said through 1963 in the episode) and in this series of episodes we’ll hear Neal’s interview from 2015 when Mr Bilson returned to Mayberry Days to share even more of his Mayberry knowledge. This first part of the interview has some amazing stories related to The Andy Griffith Show. The topics he will shed light on are: where and how episodes were made, scripts were refined, and what an amazing team Andy and Don were.

SPECIAL NOTE OF THANKS: Neil & Pat Coleman from the “Remembering Mayberry” chapter of TAGSRWC for providing the recording of Professor Brower’s Class from Mayberry Days 2015.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Charlie Ruggles.

Hal Smith has been on my mind the last few weeks so I thought we’d look back at the March 26, 1999 issue of The Bullet and see what Professor Brower had to say about the episode, “Hot Rod Otis.” It was the 30th episode of season three and the 115th episode filmed over-all. Professor Brower brings us comments from episode writer Harvey Bullock that you will not find anywhere else.

Randy Turner bring us a This Week in Mayberry History report covering actor Roy Barcroft who had an amazing career and who played “Clint Biggers” in the episode “Dogs, Dogs, Dogs.”

We also hear a couple of voice mails and a report from Betty Lynn‘s 92nd birthday back on August 29, 2018.

This is our third episode with Neal Brower interviewing writer Harvey Bullock at Mayberry Days in 2002. Harvey Bullock (June 4, 1921 – April 23, 2006) wrote 31 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, 21 episodes of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. and co-wrote the TV movie Return to Mayberry with Everett Greenbaum. So much of what we, as fans, know of the town of Mayberry was created by the mind of this amazing man.

The audio isn’t perfect but this content is something you will not want to miss. Harvey didn’t seem to want to hold the mic up to his face so he’s a little hard to hear. From time to time there are sound artifacts that I’ve cleaned up as best I could so they wouldn’t be distracting.

In this episode Harvey discusses his joy at being one of the writers on The Andy Griffith Show, his favorite scene and how it wrote itself with him just sitting there as an observer.

You will not want to miss any of this series.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Cheerio Meredith.

Over the next few weeks, we have a real jewel to enjoy. Neal Brower interviewed Harvey Bullock at Mayberry Days in 2002.

The audio quality isn’t quite as good as you may be use to for this podcast but the content is something you won’t find anywhere else. Harvey didn’t want to hold the mic up to his face and the audio comes from a video tape so at times there are artifacts but I’ve cleaned it up to a point that I don’t think you’ll be distracted.

In this episode Harvey discusses his early career, meeting his wife Betty on the Today Show, Opie’s Hobo Friend, where “Tuscarora” and “Gollywobbler” came from, and so much more.

And this is just part one so be sure to come back for the rest.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Bob Ross.

Conclusion of the interview with Morgan Brittany (a.k.a. Mary Alice Carter in the TAGS episode “Opie’s First Love.”). She answers some question about working in Hollywood both on TV and in movies.

David Alan Bailey was the actor who played Fred Simpson in “Opie’s First Love.”  I didn’t realize that had appeared before on The Andy Griffith Show.  I’ll let you in on the trivia as the show moves along.

Joy Ellison also appeared with Morgan on “Opie’s First Love” so we’ll talk a bit about

Thanks go out to Neil and Pat Coleman for the recording used in this episode.
