Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

A gem of a find with Mayberry’s own fun girl Jean “Hello Doll” Carson (TCNW #66: Jean Carson Interview) as the focus.

In answer to a request by caller Kyle heard in TCNW #78, I was looking around for other work our Mayberry friends did outside of The Andy Griffith Show and I found “Plan for Escape” (November 17, 1952).

“Plan for Escape” was an episode of the CBS-TV anthology series Studio One (a.k.a. Westinghouse Studio One in honor of the sponsor of the show). The story is a damsel-in-distress type gangster story and is basically a play filmed live.  Jean plays Mary Warren who is a cocktail-lounge singer.

I thought you might like hearing Mayberry’s Daphnie sing as well as a bit of the dialog. The song is “I Only Saw Him Once” by Joan Whitney/Alex Kramer.

Allan, I like finding out new things about Jean Carson. I’m going to watch “Plan for Escape” when I have the time. Thanks for including the link. It was interesting hearing Jean sing, too.

Allan, I found it interesting that in the clip you played of Jean Carson talking to the other girl, she made a comment about how the girl grabbed at the first shiny thing that excited her. A similar comment was made by Andy Taylor in the episode that had Buddy Ebsen as a guest star. Buddy Ebsen’s character was a drifter travelling through Mayberry and Barney was constantly trying to arrest him for loitering or vagrancy. Andy gave him some odd jobs to do around the house so Barney would leave him alone. However, the drifter was more interested in fishing than yard work, so he dropped the hedge clippers and went fishing. Opie then followed his lead and played hooky from school. When Andy confronted the drifter about Opie’s behavior, the drifter said Opie should be allowed to choose his way to live or Andy’s. Andy then explained that you can’t let a child choose like that, that he would grab for the first shiny thing that comes along and only later would discover the hook in it. So when I heard the Jean Carson clip, it immediately reminded me of one of my favorite episodes. Thanks Allan, keep up the good work.

Jean was a very talented actress. I find that be a person who has grown up with television and now looking back over 50 + years at old shows and movies I am picking up on spotting many of my favoite actors and actresses playing in so many more things in TV and movies. I have just about come to the conclusion that in the early days of television, the pool of talent was really a small community of those who were working actors, etc. So they made their rounds on all of the things that were being made for television. So many of our own Mayberry stars show up on a lot of my other favorite tv shows too!

Wow, this song performed by Jean Carson is great. I would have never known that she could sing like that. I have not seen this movie, but I can imagine the scene in old black and white style!
