TCNW 605: How Do You Spell Aunt Bee

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:30:59

The debate over how to spell Aunt “Bee” has been going on for years. Online, you see it spelled “Bea” a lot and I realized that in all the years of doing this podcast I have never addressed the issue specifically, until now.

I provide evidence that B-E-E is the correct spelling as well as some information about the name Beatrice and its origins. I’ve also created a PDF file that can be shared to help provide the correct information to any who are willing to read rather than listen to (or watch) this episode of Two Chairs.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring part 4 of his review of “No Time for Sergeants.”

    Greetings,

“Bea” is a time-honored nickname for ladies whose given name is “Beatrice.”

Pronounced “Bee,” my quibble was over whether or not her honorific would be “Ant,” “Ont,” or “Ain’t!.”

    Best regards,

    Andy Gregg.

Missed the live chat, but just finished watching the recorded version. I know I have seen this topic in many places over time and it still seems to hold gravity for discussion from time to time. Great episode Floyd and I think this could be the definitive answer to the question of the spelling as” BEE” or “BEA”.

I think the proof here is unquestionable and even address Francis signing her autographs as “Aunt Bea”. But ! I believe we can say the episodes showing the spelling…spells it out and it is also “written in stone.”

I would like to add though, I personally have my own “Aunt Beatrice” who lives in Hickory, NC. My dad always called her Beatrice but also called her “Bea” in his case. I grew up calling her “Aunt Bea” and still do, but the funny thing is for many many years I never really thought about the similarity to “Aunt BEE” on TAGS until about ten years ago ?

Enjoyed the podcast and you did a great job presenting the proof ! Also enjoyed Randy’s continuation of the 60th Anniversary commemoration, We are all so blessed to enjoy such great resources and friendships.
