I’m always looking for things to tell you related to The Andy Griffith Show and as part of that I was watching TAGS with my lovely wife Jan just today and spotting something that I’d never seen before.  It was on the episode “Andy the Matchmaker” and has to do with the Mayberry squad car being magic.  As I looked more, I saw that not only was there some witchery afoot but the squad car was having some work done on it.

If you watch the video version, you’ll see what I’m talking about but if you only listen…don’t feel left out…I’ll have screen shots posted in the links section for you to be able to see what I found.

This episode will address a topic that is often talked about in private but rarely in forums like this podcast. The last time I talked about it on the show was over 5 years ago in episode 119 “African-Americans in Mayberry” and that was from a different perspective.

This episode, we’re able to hear the thoughts of a lady named Kathleen McElroy who happens to be “a Black Woman is Fascinated with Mayberry and Andy Griffith” and she wrote this article that appeared in the Stillwater News Press on December 13, 2015.  I was able to contact the paper and get permission to share it with you and I know you are going to enjoy it!

I enjoyed the first episode we did on Mountain Omens & Superstitions and it certainly seems that many of you did as well because I got a lot of feedback related to that episode.  That made me think it would be good to do another episode with additional mountain wisdom from the Darling family and their kin.

I hope you enjoy the Omens & Superstitions and will stick around for the feedback we got from some of your fellow Two Chairs listeners.

Over the years, the Darling family have come to town sharing their omens, signs, and superstitions with the people of Mayberry.  Barney even added a few of his own from his grandmother’s book Signs, Omens, Portents and Charms to Ward Off Bad Luck.

I felt that it was high time I shared some of this mountain wisdom with you to help you stay healthy, lucky and loved as well as to protect you from evil spirits & the weather.

Some of these you’ll want to write down so you don’t forget them just in case you run into some bad luck and need to ward it off.   You call it superstition….I call it caution.

Since the podcast began back in 2008, we’ve dedicated two previous episodes to Myers Lake/Franklin Canyon in Los Angeles but we haven’t discussed it since 2011, so let’s revisit.

Franklin Canyon is the one place that remains where fans of The Andy Griffith Show can go and walk in the footsteps of Andy and Opie.  If you’re ever in the Los Angeles area, you do not want to miss your chance to visit the location that opened every episode of The Andy Griffith Show.

Andy and Opie walked along, Opie picked up a rock and then he threw it into the lake.  Who can forget that and if you visit the location, you’ll never forget that either.

In the episode we talk not only about Myers Lake but also a little about two “Mayberry” related commercials I recently ran across.  If you pay attention….Mayberry just seems to pop up no mater what you’re doing.

I hope there are a lot of you out there that are like me in that you are a fan of Andy Griffith and not only Andy Taylor.  If you are then you hopefully enjoyed watching Andy of Matlock. Even if you didn’t enjoy Matlock, I’m pretty sure you’re going to enjoy the Mayberry connections that can be found on Matlock.

Mayberry fan, Brian Saul, was kind enough to help me get some clips from Matlock that fans of The Andy Griffith Show are sure to love.

First up, did you know that Ben Matlock once knew a fellow that mispronounced kleptomaniacs by saying “kleptominerac?”  That’s right!  On the Matlock episode  “The Good Boy” that’s exactly what we hear.

Next, I’m sure you remember when Barney was showing Andy all he knew about Judo in TAGS episode “Barney’s Uniform.” Well, Don Knotts’ character Les Calhoun demonstrated his karate skills to Ben Matlock in the episode “The Fighter.”

Oh…and there’s so much more.  Sit back and enjoy this trip as Mayberry meets Matlock.

This episode we are able to hear from four of our listeners.

Calvin called in to talk about how many touching scenes there are on The Andy Griffith Show.  We all know that TAGS is funny but we often forget just how much the show pulled at our hearts with episodes like Opie the Birdman or Mr. McBeevee.  The writers were amazing in that they could make us laugh one week and then tear up the next. Calvin also mentioned what he thought was a blooper in “Cousin Virgil” and we’ll clear that up

Dick tells us that all Mayberry fans should get a copy of Mayberry 101 so they can learn even more wonderful facts about why the writers of TAGS did what they did during episodes.

Gary  noticed a strange and curious happening that involves Gomer’s tie and Mr. Weaver.

And lastly, we hear from Michael who shares his love of our podcast and Mayberry.

Thank all of them for calling and thank you for taking time to visit with them, and me, during this trip to Mayberry.
