TCNW 727: Singing in Mayberry Part 3

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:34:24

This episode we wrap up Col. Tim’s from Mayberry Days 2002. The previous parts of this series we saw Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou), Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass) and Maggie Peterson (Charlene) singing so if you missed that, go back and give those episodes a view or listen.

This episode we get to hear James Best (Jim Lindsey) sing…well…not really but it’s certainly something fun to see. I featured James and David Browning (The Mayberry Deputy) 15 episodes ago (#712) from Col Tim’s 2007. James and David did this routine many times over the years and they are all different, at least slightly, so I know you’ll enjoy seeing them have fun together.

Finally, we’ll have some ‘real’ singing from “Pink Floyd & the Cutups” with a performance of “There’s a Shop in Mayberry.” (Lyrics by Lyle Fales)

Mayberry Days is always special and you never know what you’re going to see. The same can be said about the other Mayberry events where the Mayberry tribute artists have a chance to perform. Try and attend an event. I really believe you’d have fun.

We’ll wrap up with some trivia.

“Just jump in where you can and hang on.”

In 1998 there was a gathering in Kingsport, TN of The Andy Griffith Show cast members. The event was called “I Remember Mayberry” and it was a special time for fans. In this episode we hear from Elinor “Miss Ellie” Donahue and James “Jim Lindsey” Best and their performances at that event. I want to encourage you to watch the video version of this episode because I believe it will add a lot to the experience. The audio isn’t what I wish it was but it’s the best quality I could accomplish. Watching along will help you pick up on what is being said if anything is a little difficult.

It’s so exciting to see Elinor singing and dancing and then to see James come out and play, well…almost play, his guitar for the fans.

David “The Mayberry Deputy” Browning was the emcee for the evening and he’ll be introducing our Mayberry friends.

We’ll try our hand a few trivia questions between performances.

Pull up a chair, sit back and enjoy the show.

TCNW 489: The Mayberry Meet-up 2018 Report

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:35:02

The 6th Mayberry Meet-up was held in Mt. Airy, NC on 20-21 July 2018. The weather was amazingly cool and dry for the month of July all the way up til it rained on us at 8pm on Saturday. Even the rain couldn’t dampen the fun had by those who attended the meet-up.

This episode gives a report about what happened at the event and I hope it encourages you to go out to one Mayberry event or another to enjoy the fellowship of the Mayberry family. You will not be disappointed when you meet other folks who are fans of The Andy Griffith Show. They are the salt of the earth.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “James Best.”

TCNW 442: James Best MD2007

I’ve been cleaning up my Mayberry room here at my house and uncovered a gem. Back in 2007 James Best appeared at Mayberry Days and as part of that appearance he performed at Col Tim’s Talent Time. He started off as the guitar player, Jim Lindsey, but it didn’t take long for the Mayberry Deputy to make him pull rank. What insued was a competion to see who was the best lawman.

James was an amazing friend to Mayberry fans so I’m happy to be able to share this amazing memory. David Browning and the Bests became close friends over the years and I know that David enjoyed sharing the stage with him.

It was with a heavy heart that I found out about the passing of James Best.  He passed away the evening of April 6, 2015 and he will be greatly missed by his fans all over the world.  James Best is known to Mayberry fans as guitar player Jim Lindsey from two episodes in season one of The Andy Griffith Show but he is loved the world over as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazzard.  But those are just two of the hundreds of characters James Best has played during his amazing life.

I thought a nice tribute to him would be to recall an interview he did with Jim Clark from March 31, 1998 issue of The Bullet.  The story was written by Jim Clark and I think it will give you a different look into James Best’s life and career.

I did an interview with Mr. Best way back in episode #38 of this podcast that you might also enjoy.  It’s fairly short so drop by and give it a listen.

In the last episode of the podcast we talked about the 3rd episode of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS), “The Guitar Player.”  James Best played “Jim Lindsey” and Henry Slate played  “Bobby Fleet.  Now we move on to the character Bobby Fleet’s second appearance on the series in “The Guitar Player Returns.”

“The Guitar Player Returns” is only 7 months and 28 episodes later and the 31st episode of season 1 of TAGS (Oct 17, 1960 – May 16, 1961) and when “Bobby Fleet” appears, he’s a different man.  No longer is Henry Slate playing the character but instead Fleet is played by Herb Ellis.

I mentioned the name Herb Ellis last episode and asked that you remember his name.  There has been discussion about who played the guitar on close-ups of “Jim Lindsey.”  James Best has stated at reunion events that he thought Herb Ellis was the one doing the actual playing of the guitar but he said he wasn’t certain. The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watcher’s Club member Paul Mulik asked Earle Hagen (the music director for TAGS) who was playing for Jim and he answered he was pretty sure was Barney Kessel.

Barney Kessel as a jazz guitarist from Oklahoma and is considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarist of the 20th century.  He was a member of many prominent jazz groups as well as a “first call” guitarist for studio, film, and television recording sessions.

Back to Herb Ellis.  Turns out Herb Ellis is also the name of a jazz guitarist but this is a different Herb Ellis from the one who plays “Bobby Fleet” in this episode.  That’s right, there are two “Herb Ellis'” just like there are two “Bobby Fleet’s.”   Let’s leave the guitarist, his name is Mitchell Herbert Ellis (Aug 4, 1921 – Mar 28, 2010), here and move long to the actor.

Herb Ellis the actor was born in Cleveland, OH on Jan 17, 1921 ( 91 years ago the day this podcast is released) and his birth name was Herbert Siegel.  Herb Ellis the actor is best known for work with Jack Webb.  He played Officer Frank Smith on the TV version Dragnet (1952) and many other characters on the radio version of Dragnet.  He appeared on many other series Peter Gunn and Perry Mason.

Two Chairs No WaitingWe first meet Bobby Fleet on The Andy Griffith Show episode “The Guitar Player.”  You’ll remember that episode with James Best as “Jim Lindsey” who Andy helps find a job playing guitar.  There are close-ups of “Jim” playing the guitar and Jame Best can’t play the guitar. Mr. Best has said at events that the fellow who played the close-ups may have been Herb Ellis.  We’ll talk about Herb more later (next podcast) so keep him in your memory.

The character “Bobby Fleet” was played by Henry Slate.  Mr. Slate appeared in only one episode of The Andy Griffith Show but he was in a long list of movies including Winged Victory, You’re in the Navy Now, The Jazz Singer, Rock around the Clock, The Shootist, Norma Rae, and the Disney films The Strongest Man in the World, No Deposit No Return, Gus, The Shaggy D.A., Pete’s Dragon, The Cat from Outer Space and Herbie Goes Bananas.  He was also on many TV series like Mission: Impossible, The Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, Barney Miller, Quincy M.E., and Lassie.

We’re going to enjoy meeting Bobby Fleet and the other characters that join us in “The Guitar Player.”  As I was going through this episode, I just kept finding great quotes that brought a smile to my face and I’m sure they’ll do the same for you.
