TCNW 560: Mayberry Like It’s 1999

I’ve been looking through my files lately to see what treasures I might find. I recently ran across some articles from 1999 from papers and magazines and I thought they might be fun to share with you.

I found a really nice story from May 16, 1999 that ran in The Orlando Sentinel called “Mayberry 101 is a studious look at a classic show.” We’ve hear from Neal Brower many times here on the podcast but this is from back when he first put out his amazing book so we’ll hear what the Sentinel thought about it.

I also found a story from Jan 8, 1999 that was in USA Today Weekend titled “The Bible according to Barney Fife.” This was in the very eary days of the Mayberry Bible study and went a long way in helping spread the word about the study originated by Joey Fann and Brad Grasham.

I also found a couple of other fun things so I hope you enjoy yourself partying like it’s 1999.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Morgan Brittany.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Back in 1998 two guys named Joey Fann and Brad Grasham started a summer Bible study at their church.  You may have heard about the Mayberry Bible study.  Well, Joey and Brad are the fellers that started at Twickenham Church of Christ in Huntsville, AL.

Joey is also a member of the Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bullet Board? Chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club so I’ve known him from before he started the Bible study.  I was also able to attend 2 of the classes he and Brad did that summer.

Joey went on to write the book “The Way Back to Mayberry: Lessons From a Simpler Time.”  A revised and extended version of the original was released in September 2010.

I hope you’ll enjoy the episode as we look a bit deeper in to how things started and what exactly was happening back in 1998.
