Andy Taylor and Howard Sprague are true friends. They occasionally bowl and fish together and they serve together on the church's building and safety committee. When Howard and Millie Hutchins make plans to marry, Howard asks Andy to be his best man.
In fact, it is surely his Mayberry friends that draw Howard back after he "followed his rainbow" and moved away briefly to St. Benedict's Island in the Caribbean. "I guess I just followed it to the wrong end," he remembers. "My pot of gold is right here in Mayberry."
