The Darlings - Briscoe (Denver Pyle), daughter Charlene (Margaret Ann Peterson) and the Boys (Rodney Dillard, Dean Webb, Mitch Jayne and Doug Dillard) - are an odd bunch, even in Mayberry. They cross the Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge (an oak tree that fell across the creek) and head to Mayberry whenever there's a need.
Briscoe describes his family: "We're knowed as a family of hearty-eating men and beautiful, delicate women." The Boys can also play some sizzling bluegrass music. When their Mayberry visit is over, Briscoe hollers, "Everybody back on the truck" and off they go to the hills in their old flatbed Ford, whose radiator takes 11 hatfulls of water, by the way.
