February 28, 2006 - Msg 2003:
I feel like each time someone of Don Knotts's decency and humanity dies, this country loses a bit more of its decency and humanity. No, Don Knotts may not have been Gregory Peck, but in --quite literally-- a funny way, he brought a sense of tenderness and sensitivity to Barney Fife that made that character --- in retrospect -- a pretty sweet role model.
When I first moved to Los Angeles, I remember that The Andy Griffith show was brought up in a class I was in, and almost everyone in the room, including the instructor, got quite a laugh at the thought of such a place as Mayberry existing in the real world. Well, a few of us in the class spoke up -- we had lived in or visited real towns with a sense of decency and community such as Mayberry, and had also been fortunate enough to have known people like Andy and Barney. And, boy, I would trade in almost everyone I've met in L.A.. - or for that matter Houston, Las Vegas or Washington D.C. --- for people like those decent, humane characters that we know exist in real life but are no longer considered "cool" or aggressive enough for our modern world.
Thanks for the smiles, Don --- you'll live on in my heart and memory.

I had the opportunity to see Mr. Knotts in person at East Tennessee State University as part of the homecoming program in the early 1980's. He spoke for about an hour, explaining how he got into show business but mostly performing skits. In one skit he portrayed a weather man, as usual he was hilarious. Having a chance to shake his hand and say hello was a wonderful experience. Thanks for the memories.

When Don Knotts began his run on "The Andy Griffith Show," he created one of television's most unforgettable and most beloved characters. In loving memory of "Barney" . . .
America's Home Town
By: Debra Arender, Ashville, AL
Once upon a time,
In a place called TV-Land,
There lived a town of gentle folk -
Who loved their fellow-man.
The neighbors did not lock their doors.
The sheriff bore no gun.
Sundays were reserved for God,
And Saturdays for fun.
Children obeyed parents,
And respected teachers too.
Sarah "manned" the switchboard,
And "Barn" loved Thelma Lou.
Gomer actually pumped your gas,
And Floyd would cut your hair.
At Myers Lake - you could catch Bass.
Aunt Bee would always care.
It was a much more easy time,
Than we have known of late -
In this precious town of little crime,
That seems so out of date.
Oh - that we could have more towns,
So innocent and sweet.
Oh - that we could live like that -
Again - God grant us peace . . .

Words like "superstar" and "icon" are thrown around freely in the sports and entertainment world. Don Knotts, without a doubt, can be and will be thought of in these terms. To me, Barney Fife remains the greatest single character in TV sitcom history. If you think about it, there is a bit of Barney in each of us; we often carry around a higher sense of self-importance than we often should. However in the end, Barney always came around and "wised up". Don Knotts has passed away, but Barney Fife will live forever.

I have never written like this before. But, Andy Griffith and Don Knotts have been icons in our family for years. My grandfather, a judge, always loved the Mayberry show when it first aired on television. "His first stint as an entertainer was as a ventriloquist, performing paid gigs at parties and other events in Morganstown. He decided to make a stab at a career in show business, moving to New York City after graduating from high school, but he only lasted in the Big Town for a few weeks. He decided to go to college, enrolling at West Virginia University, but when World War II engulfed America, he enlisted in the Army. The 19-year-old soldier was assigned to the Special Services Branch where he entertained the troops. It was while in the Army that Don ditched ventriloquism for straight comedy."

My Name is John Beaty and I am 38 years old. I grew up as a child watching the Andy Griffith Show from our dinner table, because it was the only show my mother would permit me to watch while I ate. I remember fondly listening to my father laugh very loudly at Barney and Andy's antics, and as I grew older, I found myself laughing as he did. I've never stopped watching the show, and I have probibly seen every episode (at least the black and white episodes) at least 100 times. Let's put it this way I can close my eyes any time of the day and through by memory envision each scene and hear every dialogue. I can't imagine my life without this show. Barney Fife was more than a television character to me, he was a friend. I have often said that I hope heaven is a lot like Mayberry. If it is, I expect to see Barney Fife again someday, in his patrol car or behind his desk, trying to remember the preimble.
February 28, 2006 - Msg 2130:
No one else could have played Barney Fife as well as Don Knotts did.In my heart he was the star of the show.I always loved the Andy Griffith show for its christian values and because of Barney's character.I wish we had more shows just like that one today.
February 28, 2006 - Msg 2131:
I enjoyed Don's acting not only because of his comedic "wired" over-reactions, but also for the contrasted elements of Barney's character that he developed. "Barney" was happy and energetic, yet so caring and involved with the characters he played against. He was sincere, loyal, and gentle. He was sentimental. That's why we felt we knew him. That's why we wanted him as our friend. If he had only been a wild and crazy nut case, we would have laughed at him....but not loved him.
Don made us laugh at him AND love him. We always will.
