Goodbye to Don Knotts! I felt like he had a great face that he used to his advantage, when playing a character such as our beloved Barney. Yes, his eyes were also a big part of his facial expressions, too. His dance with the lady convict has to be one of my favorite scenes. How he could keep a straight face, as he tried to dance her out onto the porch cracks me up every time, because most of us would be laughing, if we had to do that scene.

When my Dad passed away in 1978, he died a County Police Officer in Hohenwald, Tennessee. He was dedicated to his job, just as Barney was. I can remember that at one time in his career, he drove a Ford Galaxie Squad Car, just like Barney drove. Many folks called him, "Barney." In 1985 I started my career in Law Enforcement and the last two yrs I have served as a Deputy Sheriff. My friends and family call me "Barney" a lot. My sister teases me all the time, asking me, "Barney, do you got your bullet in your pocket?" I consider it a proud honor to be put in the same bracket with Deputy Barney Fife. When I die, I hope I go out with half as much respect that folks had for my Dad and Barney. When my Dad died, I can just picture God meeting him at the Pearly Gates with him a Squad Car to drive. Now that Barney has passed on, I know that he is riding along with my Dad on patrol. Deputy Barney Fife---I will never forget you and I thank you for all the laughs you gave me and the lessons I learned from you. I look forward to meeting up with you and my Dad so that I can ride with y'all May your soul rest in peace.

Barney Fife was a part of a better, simpler time when one could watch TV and not be bombarded with the s-e-x, drugs, and rock and roll mentality that is so prevalent today. Oh, my darin', oh, my darnin' oh, my darin' Barney Fife.
He's a deadly crime-stopper, what a copper Barney Fife.
Then one day there come a-ridin' two bad men to rob a bank.
But Fife was tricky, a dead-eye dickey. Now they're locked up in the tank.

Oh, my Barney, oh, my Barney, had a jail and couldn't lock it.

Mr. Knotts will be dearly missed by all... My husband and I have loved watching Barney for years and now our children love to watch as well. We own all of the shows on tape and DVD. We have even taped it when TBS has had the specials 8 Great Hours of Andy. We have never missed a reunion or interview show. We have watched it so much that our bird whistled the theme song all the time. We own shirts, pictures and memorbillia of Barney and all of the characters from Mayberry. Barney will live on forever on our televisions and in our hearts along with little quotes that he has given us to say. His facial expressions can be seen when you close your eyes and picture him, all the way from Mayberry to California. He was a true master in his profession. Missouri sends out its condolences to Mr. Knotts' friends and family members and to anyone that had a chance to be friended by the real king of slapstick comedy.

As I sit here beginning to write still another tribute to Don Knotts ("Barney") I looked down at my mouse pad and there he is along with Andy, Gomer and little Opie. Barney is posed with a sling shot, loaded and aimed at me. I am of course recalling the time he was showing off his talents of "trick shooting" to little Opie. All around our house are reminders of this talented man, as I'm sure is the case of so many others. It occurred to me, I might want to put this mouse pad up and preserve it????? Nah!! I'm going to keep it out, use it and enjoy "Barney" looking back at me every day as I sit at my computer.
Thanks for the memories our dear Don!

In our lifetime we travel many roads. Fortunately my road crossed with Don Knotts/Barney Fife on the TV screen and once over his intercom in Beverly Hills. What a thrill it was just to hear his voice and have him talk to me. There will never be another like him. Don and his character of Barney Fife come once in a lifetime and I am thankful he could be part of my life. God bless Don Knotts and his family.

It was with great saddness that I learned of Don's passing. His portrayal of Deputy Barney Fife on the old Andy Griffith Show reminded us all of a kinder and gentler time and place that will never be seen again. I wish I could again stroll the streets of Mayberry, but sadly the old RKO Forty Acres backlot that was used in filming the Mayberry scenes was torn down in 1976 and replaced by an industrial complex. I will greatly miss Don and his enormous talent. Thankfully I have an autograph from Don that will now become one of my most cherished possessions. Rest in peace my friend. Bill in Omaha.

As someone posted, "Barney" will live forever, like John Wayne and Bob Hope. Our local newspaper printed a charming editorial cartoon yesterday in which "Barney"--bug-eyed as usual--is trapped behind the Pearly Gates. "Floyd" tells him, "Relax, Barney, for once you locked yourself in the right place!"
I was always struck at how many episodes revolved around folks trying to spare Barney's feelings. Example: the classic choral solo shown last night on TVLand. How rare these days to see simple kindness and compassion spotlighted. I'd wish you rest well, dear friend, but I rather think you'll be as other posters have said...patrolling Heaven, complete with that one bullet. Celia in Kansas.

my favorite Don Knotts memory...it was at the The Andy Griffith Show cast reunion in Winston-Salem, NC in 1995. It was when Don Knotts *took the stage*...there was such a thunderous applause like I have never heard.....and I've been to Rolling Stones concerts!!
During the autograph session, when it was finally my turn, I asked Don if he would be able to *personalize* a photo with an autograph..my wife and I were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary....I asked him if he could write *to Mike and Patty, Happy tenth*...He seemed almost embarrassed to declined, saying that he was under such pressure to sign so many autographs that evening...he just didn't have the time to personalize any...even though he couldn't do it, he was so gracious and kind. and later, i realized that i was being selfish asking him to do it because the line to see him was like 10 times longer than any other of the *stars*. He did let us pose for a picture with him though, which i cherish!
There really just aren't words to describe the joy and pleasure that Don Knotts brought to people..I think his life is proof that God does exist!!

There will never be a cast or show ever to be assembled again, that can match The Andy Griffith Show...it is timeless! We are all the better for having known Barney, Andy, Opie, Gomer, Goober, Floyd, Otis, Helen, Thelma Lou, Aunt Bee, Ernest T., The Darlings, Miss Ellie and, Oh yes, of course the Fun Girls!
