Yo Goober...rest in peace. Thanks for the laughs!
May 06, 2012:
I knew his health was bad, but still sad. One of the funniest and most original actor/comedians of all time. Plus a great human and humanatarian. Prayers for his family. In honor of Goober, I'm eating some spaghetti and a sammich for lunch.
May 06, 2012:
These are the days I dread... losing our Mayberry family. Many of us base our morals and life mission on what the show instills... another piece of all of us has died. Very sad day. Love ya goob, I know you're making God laugh right now.
May 06, 2012:
Heaven says "Hey!" God Bless You, George. thanks for the memories!
May 06, 2012:
Thanks George for all the good times. Say hey to Barney for me. Jim in Glen Rose, TX.
May 06, 2012:
I was over at FOXNews browsing the news when I saw their picture and AP article about George. They quoted him as saying in 1985:"There's a residual effect of knowing I've made America laugh. I'm not the only one, but I've contributed something."
Yes, George...you certainly not only put smiles on our faces but gave us belly laughs, too! You did a mighty fine job at it!
I'm so glad I had a chance to meet you at one of the Nashville Reunions. Your autograph is safely in my "Mayberry Memories" book.
R.I.P. Goob... Maybe Aunt Bea heard you were coming and she & Barney will be standing at the pearly gates with one of her gooseberry pies!

May 06, 2012:
Doesn't Andy really say it all?
In a statement, Andy Griffith said, "George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago. We would talk about our health, how much we missed our friends who passed before us and usually about something funny.
"I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.'
...from WSMV Channel 4 News Nashville
May 06, 2012:
Got to meet him at a TAGS event and he was so gracious. He once said that he wanted his epitaph to read, "I hope I made you laugh." He sure did.
May 06, 2012:
I really enjoyed him on the Andy Griffith show. He had such a kind face, and I hope you and Barney are having a great reunion. Thanks for all the laughs!
May 06, 2012:
andy said the last thing george said to him was i love you \ there will never be another goober \ thank you for all the years \ we will miss you
May 06, 2012:
I knew who Goober was before I knew Andy. In my little mind it was The Goober Pyle Show. Yet another fond memory of my childhood silenced for now. We'll miss you, Old Friend.
May 06, 2012:
We are so sad to hear about the passing of George. He was a special man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as his close friends Jim and Mary Clark. David, Linda and Heather
May 06, 2012:
I am sad he has left us and yet I understand he knew Christ...so it is just "so long" for now. I am heart warmed to know that Andy and George exchanged "I love you's" in the last few days. Real men can say and mean that. Blessings and comfort to George's family and friends.
May 06, 2012:
There's an empty place in Mayberry today that can't be filled. Our prayers to his family. Thank you, George, for giving us Goober to enjoy for all these years. Harold & Barb.
May 06, 2012:
Very sad. Have and will continue to enjoy much laughter thanks to him and his role as Goober.
Andy's and his real life relationship another shining example of what we all continue to love about The Andy Griffith Show: on top of it all was true respect, friendship and love that comes busting through the television screen whenever you watch.
May God strengthen and comfort his family and friends during this time.
Thanks for the laughs Mr. Lindsey, "good ol goob"
May 06, 2012:

My heart weeps! Thank God for you,you made my world a better place. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lindsey family.See you in heaven ,George. Deb
May 06, 2012:
What a fine Southern gentleman!! I have this mental picture of George, up in heaven, with a small crowd gathered around him, acting out that scene from TAGS where he "takes off" on Cary Grant, walks like Chester, etc. Everyone in the crowd is howling with laughter. And so, Mr. Lindsay, your gift of laughter goes on. A job well done, sir...rest in peace.
May 06, 2012:
There will always be a part of Goober in all of us and thank God for that!
May 06, 2012:
I just found out and am sitting here at work trying desperately not to cry. Only Mayberry fans understand the pain Mr. Lindsey's passing evokes. What a national treasure he was. Incidentally, msg. #22, a funeral home in Nashville TN is currently giving out information about the death. Didn't say if that's where the services will be held.
From Glenn and Myra Reid-- "matched together like a racy team of buggy mules"

May 06, 2012:
RIP, Goober! Say "Hey" to Barney, Aunt Bee, Helen and the rest of the gang up there!
May 06, 2012:
I was George Lindsey's "Companion and Caregiver" for the past 7 months and very lucky to call him a friend. We spent our days going to lunch and talking about his days as an actor on TV, Broadway and Film. Listening to first hand accounts of Hollywood "inside scoop" was thrilling and always entertaining! Mr. Lindsey's wit and in particular his incredible memory for hundreds of song lyrics (dating back to the 30's) made our days happy, silly and full of laughter. I as well as millions of Americans who grew up watching Mr. Lindsey on TV (Andy Griffith, Mayberry RFD, Hee-Haw, etc.)--mourn the loss of both "Goober" and a more innocent era that many of us grew up in. He was as much a part of my childhood as roller skates and comic books. He was, and is, thanks to reruns, a great American treasure and an icon that we will all truly miss.
May 06, 2012 :
George Lindsey brought joy and laughter into my life. He will be missed.

May 07, 2012 :
Msg #22, according to the reports from WSMV, the Nashville NBC affliate, he's supposed to be transported back to his hometown of Jaspar, Ala for burial. I think Marshall-Donnelley-Combs is taking care of the body until transport arrangements can be made.
As far as funeral homes, he's at one of the best.
My dearly departed mother was also there at one time.
May 07, 2012 :
Andy once said Goober was the type of person, that he would comment that a restaurant "had good salt." I thought that was a good description of his enduring character Gomer.
May 07, 2012 :
As funny as he was on the various episodes, he was equally kind and pleasant on the two occasions I met him. He's in a better place now, and the world is richer for having known him.
May 07, 2012 :
Heaven now gets to hear Goober "take off" on Cary Grant! Thank you George for also "taking a car apart" and for taking ME apart with laughter!

May 07, 2012 :
The world is a little sadder today, without the gentle wit and humor of George Lindsey. He was "Goober" to fans of TAGS, and at the same time he did some stellar work in other shows, and some classic voice-overs in some Disney animated movies. He was the guy everyone would love to know personally, because he had the talent to make you almost believe that you did! I'm so glad that this is only "See you later." Our loss is Heaven's gain. --Romeena in Irving, TX

Sad...I feel like the world lost one of the "good ones" yesterday. In a climate where "bad" is searched out and reported...you never read a bad word about him. He only gave the world one the greatest gift of all - laughter.

May 08, 2012 :
After all these years of watching TAGS reruns, the scene that still makes me laugh the most is in "Goober and the Art of Love" when Barney and Goober are on Helen's front porch peeking at Andy and Helen watch television while Barney provides Goober with a running commentary of Andy's "moves" and Goober, getting more and more excited, can't control himself and jumps up shouting, much to Barney's horror and Andy & Helen's astonishment. Funny funny scene -- funny funny man. Thank you, George Lindsey. You might be gone but you're still with us.

There was such a simple sweetness about Goober... you couldn't help but love him! He helped to make TAGS the true hit it was (and always will be!)! In fact, to this day, I challenge ANY television station to dare to put a show on now that would even compare to TAGS! It can't be done! Such a shame! Just sayin'...
