Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

We’re heading back into the archives of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) to read about Mayberry folks from the mountains around town. The story is from “The Bullet,” the official newsletter of TAGSRWC, volume 1 issue 2 (March 18, 1983). This is a fun trip back down memory lane to the very early days of TAGSRWC.

We also hear from a caller who lets us know that Richard “Doc” Ferrara (one of the subjects of our last episode – #121) was mentioned on The Andy Griffith show episode “Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army.”

Don’t forget to leave comments or ask questions on the TwoChairsNoWaiting.com website or using the contact information given in the podcast. Allan, I enjoyed the podcast as usual, and just wanted to say that I appreciated Paul Mulik’s contribution to this week’s episode. (Paul always has interesting things to share!) I also like his idea of devoting a future podcast to all the times real-life names were mentioned on TAGS. I like that kind of behind-the-scenes information relating to the actors’ personal lives. Hope you can pull that together!

From Allan: Hey Janet! I’m with you, I always enjoy it when Paul calls or writes in. He’s a fountain of Mayberry knowledge.

Early Gilley’s name was used a couple of times; There are STILL at least a couple of Early Gilleys in Surry County. I’m guessing that was someone Andy knew grewing up.

From Allan: Daddy, you are soooo right. I’ve met several generations of Earlie Gilleys when at Mayberry Days. Earlie, the original (there’s a Jr. and several other numbers), was married to Andy’s first cousin Lorraine Beasley Gilley. Both Earlie and Lorraine will be remembered by Mayberry fans from their several mentions on TAGS.

This is the first time I’ve seen your podcast. Great job. It’s good to know that there are others who love Andy Griffith. I never realized that Ernest T Bass went on to direct a movie I just watched, “With Six you Get Eggroll”.

Thanks for all the research you’ve put in to this. I’ll be watching! (Also, I’ll head over to iTunes and give you a shout out there.)

From Allan: Lois, I’m glad you found the podcast and I hope you’ll enjoy going back and listening to our past episodes as well as future ones.

Speaking about Mountain people, here are a couple of observations from A Feud Is A Feud. Watch closely as Andy unloads Wakefield and Carters shotguns so they wont accidentally shoot each other as they duel. When Andy hands their guns back he switches the guns and they each get the wrong gun back. Secondly, when Andy goes to Wakefield’s house to find out what started the feud, what was on Wakefield’s Beagles head? You have to watch closely, it’s in the frame where they show the dog for the last time.

    Answer: It’s a fly.

From Allan: Thanks for writing in, Richard. I’ll be watching for that fly next time I watch that episode. I had noticed the shotgun switch but I bet others hadn’t and it would make a good thing to mention on the show. Thanks for reminding me of it!

While watching Podcast 121 I was reminded about a question I have had in the back of my mind for some time. Did Don Knotts really play the harmonica or was he faking it like Jim Best? The show indicated that he did indeed play music with Dr. Ferrara but never stated what instruments he played.
