It’s Thanksgiving time and that made me think about things I’m thankful for. I guess it goes without saying that I’m thankful for The Andy Griffith Show and it’s been four years since I’ve said that in an episode. It was all the way back in TCNW #261 when I talked about what I thankful for so far as Mayberry goes. I figure it’s time to say it again.
I’m thankful that Andy created the town of Mayberry for us to visit anytime we’d like but there are many things that Mayberry has given me that I want to make sure everyone knows about at least some of what Mayberry has given me in my life.

You folks remember the hearing the story written in New York’s The Sun newpaper back in 1897? I know you weren’t alive but it’s a famous story where a little girl wrote to the newspaper asking if Santa Clause was real. Well, that’s where I came up with the title of this weeks podcast episode because I had a voice mail from Nancy asking if Mayberry was a real town.
That question made me think of that long ago question from 8 year old Virginia O’Hanlon because I truly believe that Mayberry certainly exists as love and generosity and devotion exist. The spirit of Mayberry is something all Mayberry fans share. Andy once said that The Andy Griffith Show was about love. As sure as love it real, so is Mayberry and it lives right there in our hearts.

We first hear from Randy Turner about the Mayberry Halloween connections then move on to the story of the Golden Arm.
The Golden Arm is a folktale appearing in many cultures through oral tradition. It was most famously told by Mark Twain and also used by him to instruct others in how to tell a story. In 2015, I presented the Mark Twain version of the story in episode #349. This being Halloween, it is time to tell the version of the story I discovered in 2016. Gather those you love nearby to keep you safe as you listen or watch.
This is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like children or Barney and Gomer, away from this episode… I wouldn’t want to have them staring into the night to see if someone might be lurking there looking for a golden arm.

I’m traveling to the Mayberry Cruise 2017 this week so I didn’t have much time to get things together for this episode BUT you’re in for a treat. Randy Turner stepped in to add to the Mayberry spirit by sharing a wonderful comment made by a member of the Gomer & Goober Pyle Comic Book Literary Guild Facebook page. I know you’re going to enjoy it and thanks to Randy for co-hosting this week.

On the 11th of October 2008 the first episode of Two Chairs No Waiting was published. Since then I have created enough content to allow a listener to consume Two Chairs for 6 days and 15 hours. That’s almost 24 hours a day for a week. If you have listened to all of those hours, I’m amazed you made it through. Even if you’ve listened to the majority, I’m humbled and thankful.
This episode marks the 9th Anniversary of this show and I thought it would be a good place to just have a conversation about Mayberry. That’s what I did on a podcast hosted by John Lane called “Goober Say Hey” that recently ended it’s run after 23 episodes. John interviewed me for his final episode and we talked about a rang of Mayberry related topics to include Mayberry events held around the country, where The Andy Griffith Show was filmed, how I keep Two Chairs going, and much more.
This is going to be the longest episode I’ve ever posted so keep in mind you can pause and come back later if need be. So, sit back and enjoy two Mayberry fans talking about our love for The Andy Griffith Show. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring The Andy Griffith Show is going to be released as a SPECIAL Episode so it is featured, as it should be.
