We're glad to have you join us in our "home town" of Mayberry, North Carolina. Come on in and sit on the porch and we'll get to know each other a little bit better."Mother Figure" Chapter put out it's first newsletter back in early May 1995. It's called, "My Sen-Tence". Both the "Mother Figure" and "My Sen-Tence" names come from the same episode of TAGS, "The Education of Ernest T. Bass". ("I want to do my sen-tence.")
"My Sen-Tence" was something that grew out of the "good conversation" happening on the "Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board?" Chapter located on the internet. I wanted to share some of the fun with folks that don't have access to e-mail so, I took some of the best from "WBMUTBB?" and printed it up in a newsletter.
If you get "The Bullet", you may have seen me. I'm the 'nut' that has impersonated our favorite town barber, Floyd Lawson, at many Mayberry events. I never expected to be impersonating Floyd. It just kind of happened. (That's me on the right. I think you could have guessed that.)
It all started in 1994 at Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy, N.C. Earlier that year, David Browning (our favorite Barney Fife impersonator) and I were talking and I was doing Floyd-isms for him. He started to laugh and told me I should try impersonating Floyd. Well, one thing lead to another and "here I am." David will tell you, "I created a monster" if you ask him about me.
I've been impersonating Floyd over a year now and the Lord has greatly blessed me through it. I have had the chance to meet some of the nicest people you could find and I'm still taken aback when I'm asked, as Floyd, to sign everything from paper to clothing. Thank you to everyone that has spoken a kind word to me about my performances over the last year or so.
I was even given the chance to be "Floyd" to Jean Carson's "Naomi". You remember when the "Convicts at Large" had Barney and Floyd up in the cabin and Naomi asked Floyd if he wanted to fight..... It was a real honor for me to be able to perform even a short skit with Jean Carson. She also played everyone's favorite "Fun Girl", Daphne, with the unforgettable voice. ("Hello Doll.") My thanks to Lyle Fales of the Mayberry Town Council Chapter for setting up the whole scene.
Well, that's a little about "Mother Figure" Chapter and me (your host for your stay in Mayberry). I should also tell you that I am married to a wonderful, TAGS loving, woman who's name is Jan.
She puts up with the time I spend keeping "Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board?" going and that's saying a lot. We had our first child on December 19, 1996 and his name is Adam. (Being the proud daddy that I am, I did a web page for everyone to be able to see our little boy.) And yes, I do have a real job. I'm an electrical engineer here in Huntsville.
Thanks for your time and enjoy your stay in our little corner
of Mayberry. Please write me to say "hey" if you have a chance. I'd love
to hear from you. - Allan
