Mayberry Meetup

The Mayberry Meet-up is an annual gathering of Mayberry fans in Mt. Airy, NC held the 3rd weekend of July.

What is a “Mayberry Meet-up” you might ask. Here’s Allan’s reply to that question, ” Well, as you may know, I’ve been doing a podcast about The Andy Griffith Show since 2008 and I’m always trying to connect with the listeners. One way of doing that is to have a “meet-up” with listeners which is really just folks getting together in order to visit.”

“Back in July 2013 Jan, my wife, and I were going to Mt. Airy because I had a chance to interview Betty ‘Thelma Lou’ Lynn for the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast. The trip was a perfect time to see if the ‘meet-up’ idea would work so I mentioned on the podcast and on the “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board” e-mail list that we would be in Mt. Airy on a certain date. I thought maybe two or three people might meet us for dinner during the weekend that we were in town. To my amazement we had 29 Mayberry fans join us for that first ‘meet-up.'”

Because of the number of folks that attended, Allan felt he had to come up with something for them to do rather than just go out to dinner together. The idea of gathering around the gazebo on the grounds of the Mayberry Motor Inn in the evenings and watching The Andy Griffith Show and visiting together was born. Since that original gathering, the Mayberry Meet-up has grown to well over 130 people but don’t worry…..things are still relaxing, “easy and slow.”

Other than gathering in the evenings, no “scheduled” events are planned but there is plenty to do in and around Mt. Airy, NC to fill your days.
