This week we have the conclusion of the stage play we began in the last episode. If you didn’t watch/listen to part 1, I encourage you to go back and do that before you partake of the second half of the play.

Back in September 2015 some of the Mayberry tribute artists traveled to Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, TN to perform a play written & directed by David “The Mayberry Deputy” Browning called “Ernest T’s Rock Concert.” I featured the first portion of the play, this segment called 23rd Psalms, that was written by Joe Gritton about a year ago in episode 847 of the podcast.

I’ve resisted showing the entire play because the hope was always that we might be able to perform the play in other locations. After eleven years, I think that hope has been overcome by the reality that we’ll never be able to do it again. It’s a really great show written by David and I’m proud of what was done and I think it’s time to share it with the world.

This interview was recorded on the 2024 Cruise to Mayberry. Part 1 was last episode and in part 2 Dennis talks more about Mayberry and discusses how his time as a child actor wrapped up. There are questions from the Mayberry cruisers who attended the interview as well.

If you didn’t know, Mayberry lost a wonderful man on May 9, 2026. Dennis Rush, who played Opie’s friend Howie in eight episodes over a two and a half year period.

Dennis began coming to Mayberry Days, and other Mayberry events in 2018 and had become much loved by fans. His joy and love for his time on The Andy Griffith Show and at discovering how much fans remembered his appearances on the show was heartwarming.

Dennis has been featured here on the podcast in an one-on-one interview (TCNW #777) and again along with fellow castmate Keith Thibodeaux, Johnny Paul, (TCNW# 839) but he has so many amazing stories of his career that I wanted to make sure you heard.

In part 1, Dennis talked mostly about his easily career and a portion of his time on The Andy Griffith Show so go back and give it a listen if you missed it.

Don’t miss either portion of this interview. I would suggest that you go back and listen to/watch his past interviews as well. Some things are revisited but his story telling was second to none.

He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.
