TCNW 728: Opie’s Baseball is a Fumble

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:33:51

I know many of you have been missing roving reporter Randy Turner so I thought I’d talk about just some of what he has going one. The focus this week being “The Andy Griffith Show Ambassadors Magazine” published by Randy with stories by not only him but out fellow Mayberry fans. It begain back in 2020 and comes out quarterly in a 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 “fanzine” format. If you’re looking for a physical bit of Mayberry to hold in your hands, consider subscribing.

To give you a taste of what you are missing in the Ambassadors Magazine, we’re going to cover an article from the Fall 2020 edition called “Fumble Ball in Mayberry.” No, it’s not about a drill done at football practice. It’s about a form of baseball/softball played with a balled called a “fumble ball” and there’s a connection to Mayberry. Dick Villard joins Randy in the creation of this bit of Mayberry trivia you likely have never heard.

We’ll play some fun Mayberry trivia following the fumble so stick around for all the fun.

TCNW 727: Singing in Mayberry Part 3

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:34:24

This episode we wrap up Col. Tim’s from Mayberry Days 2002. The previous parts of this series we saw Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou), Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass) and Maggie Peterson (Charlene) singing so if you missed that, go back and give those episodes a view or listen.

This episode we get to hear James Best (Jim Lindsey) sing…well…not really but it’s certainly something fun to see. I featured James and David Browning (The Mayberry Deputy) 15 episodes ago (#712) from Col Tim’s 2007. James and David did this routine many times over the years and they are all different, at least slightly, so I know you’ll enjoy seeing them have fun together.

Finally, we’ll have some ‘real’ singing from “Pink Floyd & the Cutups” with a performance of “There’s a Shop in Mayberry.” (Lyrics by Lyle Fales)

Mayberry Days is always special and you never know what you’re going to see. The same can be said about the other Mayberry events where the Mayberry tribute artists have a chance to perform. Try and attend an event. I really believe you’d have fun.

We’ll wrap up with some trivia.

“Just jump in where you can and hang on.”

-Briscoe Darling

TCNW 726: Singing in Mayberry Part 2

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:26:41

The videos I’ve been going through had more singing in Mayberry so I wanted to do a part 2 to share more special memories.

Special singers from Mayberry this week will be Maggie Peterson (Charlene) and she is joined on stage by Ernest T. Bass (Howard Morris). These performances were during the 2002 Col. Tim’s at Mayberry Days as were the performances featured last week by Betty and Howard. I had to do a bit of research to find the year but I was able to do it thanks to my wife, Jan, having ‘scrap booked’ wonderful albums that contained the images.

We’ll wrap up with some trivia provided by listener/viewer Paul Mulik. Thanks to Paul for his fun questions.

TCNW 725: Singing in Mayberry

Two Chairs No Waiting

I’ve been going through some old video tapes and finding treasures that I’m pretty sure you’ll never have seen unless you were at Mayberry events back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Because large sections of this podcast episode were taken from video tapes, I would suggest that you may want to watch the video version of this show. It will be fun to hear but seeing and hearing might be even better.

Special singers from Mayberry will be Thelma Lou (Betty Lynn) and Ernest T. Bass (Howard Morris). These performances were during Col. Tim’s at Mayberry Days but I don’t have a record of the year. I’m pretty sure it was in the early 2000’s because you’ll see my son, Adam, featured fairly often because his mom was doing the filming. Seems moms might like seeing their boys reaction more than focusing on Howard Morris….at least at times.

A less special singing performance will be by “Floyd.” Okay, he/I don’t really sing but I do perform with great friend of Mayberry, The VW Boys, in Kingsport, TN back in 1999.

We’ll play some trivia and ask you a question if you stick around until the end.

TCNW 724: Mayberry News Feb 2023

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:54:16

We have been gathering News from around Mayberry and wanted to share it here on the podcast. It’s already out on the web in the Weaver’s Newsletter but if you’re like me, you like to hear things more than you like to read. (Yeah, I’m one of those audiobook listening people and I do podcasts more than I write.) We’ll get news from the cast & crew of The Andy Griffith Show, Chapter News, updates and any other Mayberry information I think of. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

If you don’t like news, stay tuned for some Mayberry trivia questions and then this week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Burt Mustin” part 4 (the final segment on Burt).

Lastly, you get a sneak peak of some of the things that happen during the “Live” taping of Two Chairs episodes on Monday nights at 8pm ET. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this (I recommend you watch the video version of at least this portion of the podcast) and it’ll get you to joing us Live on Monday nights at live.TwoChairsNoWaiting.com so you can be part of the fun.

This is a long episode but how can you ever get too much Mayberry?
