In researching for the podcast, I’m always looking for items that we Mayberry fans might enjoy. I ran across this story in the Showbiz Cheatsheet and knew it was something I’d never heard and thought it would be something you’d like, too.
Jack Dodson was only in the color episodes but he really did fit into the town of Mayberry. It was easy to believe that Howard Sprague was someone who grew up in Mayberry. He just fit.

This year marked the 9th Annual Mayberry Meetup. It’s hard to believe that what started by chance in 2013 is still going as a yearly event on the Mayberry calendar. Back in 2013 I was heading to Mt. Airy the third weekend in July in order to interview Betty “Thelma Lou” Lynn for the podcast and mentioned if anyone what going to be in town that weekend we could meet-up. Twenty-five or thirty folks showed up and what I thought would be a one time event became an annual one.
Folks started asking me late in 2013 when the Meetup would be in 2014? Thus began the fun and relaxing Mayberry gathering that the Mayberry Meetup has become.

This episode we get to hear some of Ron Howard‘s memories of Don Knotts. Even as young as he was, Ron has memories of Don from the set of The Andy Griffith Show that he has never forgotten.
Andy will also have a little to share about Don and then we’ll head over to this week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Don Knotts.” I guess when it’s his birthday week (21 July), Don is really on a feller’s mind.

I ran across an article a few weeks ago that said Andy hated one of the characters. I didn’t remember ever hearing that so I went into research mode to see if it was true.
Turns out, it is a little bit true. It wasn’t the character he hated but the concept of why the character was introduced. Andy didn’t feel like it plausible to have this character interact with the sheriff in the way that he did so Andy was against it. He didn’t, however, win the battle and the character was put in place.
After we learn something, we’ll try a few trivia questions for some fun.
