TCNW 589: I Know You Won’t Let Me Down

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:26:20

In 2001 the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN had it’s first Mayberry event with Don Knott, George Lindsey, Betty Lynn, Howard Morris, Maggie Peterson, Bernard Fox, and the Dillards. I was so lucky to have been not only to attend but to perform as “Floyd the barber” along with these amazing people.

Having performed since 1994 as Floyd, I realized I really didn’t have autographs from most of the cast members so I asked my wonderful wife to take my hardcover Mayberry Memories book and get as many autographs from the Mayberry folks as she could. She was worried something might happen to the book but I told her, “I know you won’t let me down” because I knew she would take care of the book at least as good as I would, if not better.

Listen for the rest of the story.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Mitch Jayne.”

TCNW 588: Peaceful Easy Feeling

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:29:43

The Andy Griffith Show is my television show of all time. The 249 episodes were aired over eight seasons (1960-1968). It was created by Sheldon Leonard with help/suggestions from Andy Griffith, who starred as Sheriff Andy Taylor. Sheriff Taylor is a widower with a son named Opie, played by Ron Howard.

The Andy Griffith Show never ranked lower than 7th among all television programs during its run. It was ranked #1 in its final season and one of only three shows to ever go out on top (I love Lucy and Seinfeld being the other two).

Let’s see if we can capture some of that peaceful, easy feeling that The Andy Griffith Show promises.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring part 2 of “Ross Elliott.”

TCNW 587: Andy Griffith Playhouse

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:29:43

How much do you know about Andy Griffith, the man? Did you know he has a theater named after him in his home town of Mt. Airy, NC? If you’ve been to Mayberry Days you likely did know about that but I bet there are many details you might not know.

This episode we’ll learn about Andy’s boyhood school, his best friend and so much more as Two Chairs correspondent Jeff Koontz provides amazing details. He goes from Andy’s time in elementary school all the way to the present with fun facts that I know you’re going to enjoy. He even provides information about some seats that you may want to make your own. (Contact arts@surryarts.org with offers if you’re interested.)

TCNW 586: Nice Dress Nellie

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:29:54

Little is known about this charming lady. She has been referred to by fans a “Nice Dress Nellie” because in the episode that Barney arrests the whole town, “Andy Saves Barney’s Morale” as she is released from jail with the crowd, Andy acknowledges her and comments “Nice Dress, Nellie.”

According to assistant director Bruce Bilson, her was Marvel (her given name), but he did not give her full name. Marvel was a stand in for Don Knotts and Mr. Bilson picked her for the stand in job. She was seen over and over throughout The Andy Griffith Show series.

A listener to the podcast has a good theory and we need you to help us run this lead to ground.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Bob McQuain”

TCNW 585: Hold the Book on Psalm 23

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:36:41

In September 2015, a group of tribute artist gathered at Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, TN to perform a play called “Ernest T’s Rock Concert.” The play was written by David “Mayberry Deputy” Browning but a portion of the play, a segment called 23rd Psalms, was written by Joe Gritton.

Podcast listeners might remember the name Joe Gritton (known around the Mayberry internet world as “The Untrained Voice” ) as the writer of several episodes of Two Chairs featuring Bert Miller and Floyd Lawson.
The first of Joe’s podcast episodes was way back in episode 17 of Two Chairs called, “Bert Miller Barbershop Flashback” and there have been several more “old time radio” type scripts by Joe since. A link to all is in the notes below.

Back to the play, we’re going to listen to, or watch, “Barney” try to recite the 23rd Psalm as “Floyd” holds the good book on him. Hopefully you’ll see a little of the “preamble to the constitution” or “an officer of the law” come through and have smile & a laugh to brighten your day.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Clarence White.
