TCNW 524: The New Housekeeper

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:28:29

My voice is a little under-the-weather this week so I’m blessed to be able to bring you a treat from fellow Mayberry podcaster, Kevin Burke. Kevin hosts “Burke on Mayberry” and his was the first Mayberry Podcast to hit the web on March 24, 2008 about six months before the October 11, 2008 premier of Two Chairs.

The 3rd episode of Burke on Mayberry is all about the premier of “The Andy Griffith Show” episode “The New Housekeeper which originally aired on October 3, 1960. In that episode, Andy asks Aunt Bee to come to Mayberry and help raise his son, Opie, after Rose, their old housekeeper, gets married. Opie refuses to accept Aunt Bee because she does things differently than Rose. Just as Aunt Bee is about to leave the Taylor home, Opie stops her because he realizes that she needs him.

Kevin provides so fun insight and I know you’ll enjoy hearing his take on this classic episode. Be sure to visit www.BurkeOnMayberry.com to get the answer to Burke on Mayberry episode #3 trivia question Kevin asks in the podcast!

Be sure to stick around for Randy Turner’s This Week in Mayberry History!

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Mary Treen.

TCNW 523: Act Like Somebody

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome

Over the years here on the podcast I’ve talked about being a “Floyd the barber” tribute artist and how I got started but I don’t think I’ve ever talked about the first time I appeared as Floyd in public. That would be at the 5th Mayberry Days back in 1994.

Mayberry Days in Mount Airy, NC began in 1990 on the 30th anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show and my first chance to attend was at the 4th Mayberry Days in 1993. My wife and I had a wonderful time and met so many folks that are still friends to this day.

Mayberry Days 1994 is special to me because I went out there and started to “act like somebody” and that somebody was Floyd. Doing that was something completely outside my comfort zone. I’m an electrical engineer and when I started doing Floyd I was 28 years old and I’d only been married 2 years.

Believe it or not, I’m an introvert. Dressing up like a barber and going out in front of people was not something I every thought I’d be doing.

When Jan and I got to Mayberry Days in 1994, I had my barber coat as well as my Floyd “fishing” outfit ready to go. I showed up Thursday night at the “Pig Pickin'” at the Cross Creek Country Club wearing the fishin’ outfit. Back then, the award ceremony following the Mayberry Days golf tournament was held in, what I believe, was the basement of the Country Club.

Listen in for the rest of the story!

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Edgar Buchanan.

TCNW 522: Mrs. Mendlebright

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome

Randy Turner is bringing us a great report about J. Pat O’Malley this episode to start off the podcast. Mr. O’Malley appeared as Oscar Fields on The Andy Griffith Show but Randy tells us so much more.

Mr. Fields was courting Mrs. Mendlebright in the episode “Up in Barney’s Room” so it got me wondering about Mrs. Mendlebright herself. The actress who played Mrs. Mendlebright was named Enid Markey and I found out some interesting things about her.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring J. Pat O’Malley.

Bruce Bilson and Clint Howard join Neal for the last in this series of interviews. I encourage you to go back and listen/watch this series again because the information provided is a treasure for any fan of The Andy Griffith Show.

For those who may not know, Clint played the little cowboy with a peanut butter & jelly sandwich named “Leon” on The Andy Griffith Show and is the younger brother of Ron Howard who played “Opie.”

Bruce Bilson was assistant director of “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960-62 and in this series of podcast episodes we’ll hear Neal Brower’s interview from 2015 when Mr Bilson returned to Mayberry Days to share his knowledge of Mayberry. This part of the interview has amazing information related to The Andy Griffith Show that you do not want to miss. The topics he and Clint will shed light on in this episode are: Ronnie Howard as an actor, listening is important, calling Ronnie to the set, Rance Howard and what he meant to his son’s, Ronnie as a “big brother,” Howard McNear, Hal Smith, and more!

Don’t miss the first series of episodes featuring Neal Brower’s interview with The Andy Griffith Show assistant director Bruce Bilson recorded during “Professor Brower’s Class” at Mayberry Days 2011. If you haven’t heard them, check them out starting with part 1 all the way through to part 4.

SPECIAL NOTE OF THANKS: Neil & Pat Coleman from the “Remembering Mayberry” chapter of TAGSRWC for providing the recording of Professor Brower’s Class from Mayberry Days 2015.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Rob Reiner.
