Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:33:58

The Horse Trader was the 14th episode filmed and aired of The Andy Griffith Show. (S1.E14)

Plot Summary The Horse Trader:

Andy proves fallible when he cons a traveling antique dealer into buying the town’s old cannon with a fabulously fictional story of the cannon’s glorious past. Opie follows his father’s example and cons a friend of his into trading roller skates for some “licorice seeds” that Opie got in a bad trade for his cap pistol. Andy, again seeing his own actions mirrored by his son, turns around and makes amends for his bad dealings.

We’ll review “Odd Facts Known by Few” related to the episode The Horse Trader.

Then we’ll play some Mayberry trivia from Paul Mulik with this week’s topic: nicknames.

I have a special guest this week that many of you will have seen at Mayberry events held over the last many years.

Christie McLendon has been performing as the Charlene Darling character for folks since 2010 at Mayberry events. She creates parody songs related to Mayberry as well as sings all of Charlene’s songs from The Andy Griffith Show.

While best known as Charlene, Christie has be a Fun Girl, Josephine Pike, and so many other Mayberry related characters during Mayberry events. She is so talented and can do pretty much any character needed to make a show successful.

She’s also appeared as an extra on TV and movies and performs in plays in the Statesboro, GA area. Fans of The Andy Griffith Show are lucky to have someone with this type talent helping to entertain them during events. I know you’re going to enjoy hearing from her.

Stick around after the interview for some Mayberry trivia about moonshiners. How do can you do on the trivia. Thanks to Paul Mulik for providing the trivial trivialities.

This is part two of Codie’s report that began last week. I want to encourage you to possibly watch the video version of these reports because Codie shows us the sites and locations that he’s talking about and I don’t think you’d want to miss that.

As a reminder from last week, in early April 2024 members of the Mayberry Chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) lead a group on a trip to the Los Angeles, California area. They visited major filming locations for TAGS including Franklin Canyon, Red Studios and the Desilu (Forty Acres) backlot. They also discovered other filming locations that haven’t, so far as anyone is aware, been identified before such as the baseball field where Opie’s Mayberry team played Mt. Pilot and the gas station location where the Taylors & Goober stopped for gas in “Goober and the Auto Show.” They were able to sit in the plane used when Aunt Bee learned to fly and to see where that episode was filmed, Whiteman Airport. They met up with several cast or crew members including Ruta Lee, Bruce Bilson, Leroy McNees and Joy Ellison. They also met with kids of cast and crew to include Dixie Griffith (Andy’s daughter), Andy Bullock (TAGS writer Harvey Bullock’s son), and Kit McNear (Howard “Floyd” McNear’s son).

The person responsible for locating and identifying previously unidentified location was Codie Sloan and we are so fortunate to have him sharing his first hand experience of this amazing trip. Codie wanted everyone to know he’s not trying to toot his own horn with his report but hopes that through it all listening or watching can share in the excitement he, and the others on the trip, experienced.

Thank you, Codie, for letting us all travel along with you virtually.

Stick around after the report for some Mayberry trivia about moonshiners and see how many questions you can answer.

Two Chairs No Waiting

We received some sad news today here at Two Chairs No Waiting headquarters. The wonderful Elizabeth MacRae passed away on Monday May 27, 2024. She was 88 years old when she passed but she will always be remembered by Mayberry fans as a compassionate lady who enjoyed life and shared her joy with others.

To celebrate her life, we’ll listen to or watch (depending on how you partake of the episode) her performance at the 2006 Mayberry Days Col. Tim’s Talent Time show. Hosted by David “Mayberry Deputy” Browning with Allan “Floyd” Newsome on hand as backup Elizabeth took the stage as Lou Ann Poovie to sing “That Old Black Magic” for the assembled crowd of fans. It was an amazing performance that you have to hear to believe. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as she enjoyed making the crowd smile.

We have some trivia to correct from last weeks episode where I provided a bit of incorrect trivia. Then we’ll play a little trivia to make up for the mistake.

TCNW 788: Lou Ann Poovie is Ms. Elizabeth MacRae
