TCNW 484: Battle of Chateau Thierry Update

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:18:02

I covered this topic on last weeks episode but I asked for help from those who had better information. Well, thanks to James Middelton we now all have better information about the Battle of Chateau Thierry.

Remember that Andy made Barney think that General Perishing rode in the sidecar and that the motorcycle was a historical object by burning the following into a piece of wood and putting it under the sidecar seat:

First motorcycle to cross the Marne River-Battle of Chateau Thierry, 6/12/18. Passenger: Black Jack Perishing. Driver: Corporal Nate Jackson, A.E.F.”

James provided information that makes the June 12th date seem plausible so we’ll hear all about that in this episode.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Barbara Perry.”

First motorcycle to cross the Marne River-Battle of Chateau Thierry, 6/12/18. Passenger: Black Jack Perishing. Driver: Corporal Nate Jackson, A.E.F.”

Last week marked the Centennial, 100 year, anniversary of when Andy Taylor said General Black Jack Perishing rode in his sidecar connected to the first motorcycle to cross the Marne River—Battle of Château Thierry.

The problem is, it seems the Battle of Château Thierry didn’t occur until July 18, 1918. Folks could never get away with getting a date wrong in the Internet age but back in January 1964, when the episode “Barney’s Sidcar” originally aired, I guess it was easier. I am surprised that in all my years talking about Mayberry, I don’t remember anyone pointing out the date of the battle wasn’t correct.

Then I find out the Harley Davison motorcycle that Perishing was in the sidecar of was a 1927 Harley-Davidson JD. As Floyd might say, “OH! Then he COULDN’T have ridden it across a river in 1918….but it’s HOT!”

So for now, the case is as open as it ever was.

TCNW 482: Trivia 25 Questions

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:30:58

Folks love trying to answer trivia questions about Mayberry so I figured I’d give you what you want. These are 25 trivia questions for you to have fun answering. I guess I’ll have to wait to hear from you to know if they’re easy questions or not but I tried to make them as easy as possible so you could have fun and feel good about your Mayberry knowledge.

Today is the Centennial (that’s 100 years like a centipede is a bug with 100 legs) anniversary of General Black Jack Pershing riding in his sidecar on the first motorcycle to cross the Marne River—Battle of Chateau Thierry 6-12-18 (1918) along with corporal Nate Jackson AEF. This really needs to be recognized…you know for Al, Bert Stevens..the Milo Boys’ families an all the families of WW I veterans.

TCNW 481: Rance Howard Interview Part 2

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:35:06

At the 2018 Mayberry in the Midwest event, I asked fellow Mayberry podcaster John Lane if I could re-air the Rance Howard interview he did on episodes 18 & 19 of his “Goober Says Hey” podcast. He said I could so you are in for a treat, even if you heard it back in 2016 when it was originally released. This is the second and final part of the interview so make sure you didn’t miss part one.

Rance talks about: knowing George Lindsey, how Clint became Leon, his own career, what it was like with TAGS ended, the Mayberry Reunion movie, Andy & Don’s relationship, Ron & Don’s relationship, what TAGS meant to the Howard family, his time on Seinfeld, what it was like playing men of the cloth so often, Andy’s passing, Bryce Howard and her success, his advice to young actors, and what helped him as a mindset for acting.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Ellen Corby.”

TCNW 480: Rance Howard Interview Part 1

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:42:25

A couple of weeks ago, at the 2018 Mayberry in the Midwest event, I was able to visit a bit with fellow Mayberry podcaster John Lane. John was dressed as a young Sheriff Andy Taylor during the event so you may have seen him if you were there. I took the opportunity to ask John if I could re-air the Rance Howard interview he did on episodes 18 & 19 of his “Goober Says Hey” podcast. He was gracious enough to say I could so you are in for a treat, even if you heard it back in 2016 when it was originally released.

We hear from Rance about how Ron and Clint Howard turned out so well; how Ron got the role of Opie; what steps he took to raise the boys as “normal” kids; how did Rance end up in roles on The Andy Griffith Show; “Black Day in Mayberry” role for Rance; how Ron learned the technical aspects of the business; what Frances Bavier was like; memories from the set of TAGS; and so much more!

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Sam Edwards.”

TCNW 479: The History of Jack Dodson

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:27:48

Since this weeks Mayberry History by Randy is about Jack Dodson and since my voice is failing, I thought we would revisit TCNW #158 from October 18, 2011 and learn more about Mayberry’s Howard Sprague as well.

Jack liked camping, was a fan of boxing, Spencer Tracy movies, and he attended Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University as it’s known now).

I got a wonderful surprise back in 2006 when Scott Helmandollar wrote to me and shared a few photos his father had taken back in the mid-1950’s.

Let’s visit our Mayberry friends and learn more about Jack Dodson and Howard Sprague.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Jack Dodson.”
