Two Chairs No Waiting 159: The Ghost and Mr. Chicken

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:20:57

Two Chairs No WaitingSet in Rachel Kansas, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of my favorite Don Knotts movies.  That could be because so many folks from Mayberry showed up in this, Mr. Knotts first movie after leaving The Andy Griffith Show.

The first is, of course, Don Knotts as Luther Heggs but lets start of with the behinds the scenes folk.  The Ghost and Mr. Chicken was written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum.  Andy Griffith also helped re-write the script but is uncredited for his efforts.

That is only the beginning of the connections and fun trivia related to Mayberry and Don Knotts first movie following The Andy Griffith Show.  Turns out there was so much that this will be the first of two episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting that we’ll do on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

Follow me on Twitter if you use twitter. I’ve been posting Mayberry things there as another way to let folks know about The Andy Griffith Show.

Really enjoyed the podcast on “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken,” Allan. I look forward to the continuation next week. It’s one of my favorite movies — lots of fun! All the TAGS connections just make it better. I have the “Reluctant Hero” pack, and it’s good, though I agree with you about “The Love God.” Because of the Hugh Heffner-type theme, I won’t even let my daughter (who is twelve) watch it. But the others are all fun movies and appropriate for the whole family. About the house used in the film, it’s interesting how the same house can project a completely different atmosphere as a result of how it is lit and how the set is constructed. I guess that is the “actor of the house”! 😉

Alan, thank you so much for the podcast on “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”. It is my favorite movie of all time. I agree with Janet. It is a family-oriented movie with lots of TAGS alumni and spooky fun. I think the music that Vic Mizzy wrote really set the mood too. Looking forward to next week’s podcast !

Attaboy Allan ! So much great info. I saw this at the theater when I was a kid in 1966 and we watch it every Halloween. I still get chills when I hear the organ music because it was so terrifying when I saw it the first time . I remember the whole theater screaming when poor Luther was in the house all alone and the organ with blood on the keys started playing all by itself ! Taro, Caro, Salomond !

Well it took me a “few” years to finally catch this episode but I made it! Great stuff, Allan! Thanks for recommending it after viewing TG&MC tonight on Svengoolie! Now on to part 2!

    Greetings,

Jim Beggs’s character was “Herky,” as in “herky-jerky.”

Burt Mustin’s character was Mr. Delagamo.

I enjoyed your presentation, but wanted to correct character names for completeness.

    Many thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Gregg,
    Vancouver, WA.
