Two Chairs No Waiting 160: The Ghost and Mr. Chicken Part 2

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:29:48

Two Chairs No WaitingThere was so much information about the connections between Mayberry and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (TGAMC) that it took two episodes of the podcast to cover it all and part 2 is one of the longest episodes ever of Two Chairs No Waiting to fit it all in.

There are about 19 TAGS/TGAMC connections that our crack research staff..okay it was just me but it sounds better to say it was a staff…was able to find.

I hope you’ll enjoy audio clips from TGAMC and the loads of Mayberry fun in this episode of the podcast.

Loved the podcast tonight, Allan. Very enjoyable ! The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of my favorite movies and the music is great. I didn’t realize how many Mayberry connections were involved until you pointed them out. Guess that’s what made the movie so special.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is my favorite Don Knotts movie. He is Barney Fife to the core in his character.. Luther Heggs. We have the movie on DVD and watch it every Halloween (which is also my Birthday)! Our local old restored movie theater also normally shows it sometime during October each year and it is nice to get to watch it again on a big scrren where I saw it for the first time as a child.

    Hi Allan!
Thanks very much for this well-deserved 2-parter of this excellent movie!
I’ve enjoyed listening (and re-listening) to it.
All of those familiar Mayberry folks and connections have long interested me, and I learned of quite a few here I didn’t know of, before! I wonder if part of the answer to that great scripting lies in director Alan Rafkin, who also worked on the Andy Griffith Show?
I grew up watching this movie, and in fact, I think I first knew Don Knotts as Luther Heggs, coming to know him as Barney later in reruns.
Composer Vic Mizzy conducted the orchestra, playing his score, but he had to take over and play the trademark scary organ music himself, as no one in the orchestra could play it in that “goofy/spooky” way that he envisioned. Mizzy also helped to pioneer the use of fuzz guitar in orchestras and soundtracks, as well, and “The Ghost..” has some if you listen carefully.
Also, here are some additional links:
This is about a tribute night held in 2009 in New York City, in which Joan Staley (who played Luther’s girlfriend/wife Alma) and Al Checco (who played the uncredited Gaylord Patty(sp?)) appeared. Al was a lifelong friend of Don’s and he appeared at least in one episode of The Andy Griffith Show (“If I Had A Quarter Million”, playing the bad guy who puts knock out drops in Barney’s glass of milk). Here’s the link to that tribute writeup, with interesting recollections by the cast:

It’s amazing that “[“The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”] was “made quickly on a 17-day shooting schedule.”!
Also invaluable is this wonderful (long) interview of Mr. Knotts from 1999:
    http://www.emmytvlegends.org/interviews/people/don-knotts
Finally, there are several Vic Mizzy soundtracks available:
“Suites and Themes” (compilation from various Mizzy soundtracks)
“The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” (original score and incidental music – very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
“The Reluctant Astronaut” (original score and incidental music – very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
“The Shakiest Gun In The West”(original score and incidental music – very nicely remastered, with lavish booklet!)
Extra tracks are included on some, including vintage trailers and radio spots for the movies. There are still copies left, from what I’ve seen, although the record company is out of business. Interestingly enough, when these movies were originally released, no album soundtrack was released at all, up until 2001-2003, when these were originally released. “The Shakiest Gun In The West” is in a limited edition of only 5000, by the way. Here’s the website:

Thanks again for all of the hard work, Allan!
    Over and Under,
    Clyde

What a timeless movie. Having so many Mayberry connections makes it that much more timeless. It answers the question some of us have always wondered. What if Barney Fife got his own movie ? I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a restored blu ray version in 5.1, because the music is so great. Would love to see some bonus material also. That interview with Don Knotts would go great with it.

This was a great subject for a podcast. Who wouldn’t like to learn all of these things about Mayberry citizens in TGAMC. I first watched this movie at the theater when it first appeared. I will never forget it. I had a silver dollar and that bought me a ticket, popcorn, candy and a coke! Love it then and still love it today. A great ending to the movie for sure, no music like this today.

Thoroughly enjoyed both parts of the TG&MC episodes! Wow, the number of TAGS actors that were in the movie is incredible! How great would it be to have a DVD of the movie with commentary from Don Knotts or any of the actors involved. This has always been my favorite Don Knotts movie. The scene where he makes his speech at the picnic is absolute genius, performing his nervous man character to perfection! “Let me clarify this…thank you for having me.”
