Two Chairs No Waiting 369: Why a Black Woman is Fascinated with Mayberry and Andy Griffith

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:20:31

This episode will address a topic that is often talked about in private but rarely in forums like this podcast. The last time I talked about it on the show was over 5 years ago in episode 119 “African-Americans in Mayberry” and that was from a different perspective.

This episode, we’re able to hear the thoughts of a lady named Kathleen McElroy who happens to be “a Black Woman is Fascinated with Mayberry and Andy Griffith” and she wrote this article that appeared in the Stillwater News Press on December 13, 2015.  I was able to contact the paper and get permission to share it with you and I know you are going to enjoy it!

I’d like to hear your thoughts on that quote: “when a character became a series regular, they seemed to be granted an endless past.” I’m not sure I understand that.

    Hey Jon,
I think they mean that the character was given a history. They had a background of one kind or another. They went to school with Andy or had lived in Mayberry for their whole life….things like that. At least, that’s my thoughts. –Allan
