Two Chairs No Waiting 232: Touch of the Pip

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:18:02

Back on TCNW #230 I mentioned finding several letters from TAGS writer Harvey Bullock.  Harvey wrote 32 episodes of TAGS and I have several wonderful letters he wrote to me answering questions that fans had asked him and writer Everett Greenbaum.

This episode we’ll find out exactly what is the “pip” and other things like what is Pygmalion and what does it have to do with The Andy Griffith Show.  See….you really do learn things from Mayberry.

I know you’ll enjoy the show.

I was going through my collection of Mayberry stuff recently looking for items that might be of interest to fans of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS) when I found several letters from Harvey Bullock.  Fans may already know that Harvey wrote 32 episodes of TAGS.  What you may not know is he was a member in good standing of the “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” (WBMUTBB) Chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC).

As a member of WBMUTBB, Harvey would often see questions related to episodes that he had written and he would offer answers to those question.  At times, the questions were about episodes that fellow writer Everett Greenbaum had written and Harvey would take the time to go see Everett and get the answers from him.

Let’s hear what these wonder writers have to share with us and get some of the back story of Mayberry.

Listener Jerry from Cullman, AL called in with a voice mail related to a “strange and curious happening” that occurred during The Andy Griffith Show episode “A Black Day for Mayberry.”  I began to look into the events that happened throughout that episode and I have determined that  Count Istvan Teleky may, indeed, have been traveling through Mayberry in November of 1963 (when the episode was originally aired).

We see coats going from dry to wet and back to dry in seconds.  Entire men disappearing or changing their appearance right before our eyes.  Pants having gas on them…and then they don’t.  There is certainly something afoot and we’ll get to the root of it in this episode of Two Chairs.

Thanks to Jerry for shining a light on this episode of The Twilight Zone…err…I mean “The Andy Griffith Show.”

Two Chairs No Waiting 195: Leonard Blush

Two Chairs No WaitingHost: Allan Newsome

We’re gonna be talking about Leonard Blush on the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast this week.  If you don’t know, Leonard was the “Masked Singer” and is somewhat of a legend in Mayberry.  You know…he sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” a the opening of the county insecticide convention.

What we’ll be talking about is a story that Two Chairs No Waiting listener John Foster made me aware of about a Pest Control company  in Florida who’s owner says TAGS was his inspiration in creating his company 24 years ago.  I’m sure that Leonard Blush had something to do with the whole thing.

Two Chairs No WaitingThere was so much information about the connections between Mayberry and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (TGAMC) that it took two episodes of the podcast to cover it all and part 2 is one of the longest episodes ever of Two Chairs No Waiting to fit it all in.

There are about 19 TAGS/TGAMC connections that our crack research staff..okay it was just me but it sounds better to say it was a staff…was able to find.

I hope you’ll enjoy audio clips from TGAMC and the loads of Mayberry fun in this episode of the podcast.

Two Chairs No WaitingSet in Rachel Kansas, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is one of my favorite Don Knotts movies.  That could be because so many folks from Mayberry showed up in this, Mr. Knotts first movie after leaving The Andy Griffith Show.

The first is, of course, Don Knotts as Luther Heggs but lets start of with the behinds the scenes folk.  The Ghost and Mr. Chicken was written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum.  Andy Griffith also helped re-write the script but is uncredited for his efforts.

That is only the beginning of the connections and fun trivia related to Mayberry and Don Knotts first movie following The Andy Griffith Show.  Turns out there was so much that this will be the first of two episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting that we’ll do on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
