TCNW 810: Golden Arm and a Hungry Mother

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:20:47

It’s the Halloween season and it is a tradition here on Two Chairs No Waiting to tell a spooky story or two around the campfire.

This year, as we did last year, we have a special guest storyteller. James Dodson has been coming to Mayberry events for a few years now as an “Andy Griffith” tribute artist. I thought it would be fitting to have him tell the story about “The Golden Arm” and I know you’ll enjoy his telling.

I always look for other stories that fit into the feeling of the season and I found this on about the “Hungry Mother.” When traveling from Alabama to Andy’s home town of Mount Airy, NC my wife and I always pass the freeway exit for Hungry Mother State Park near Marion, VA. Almost every year, with out fail, we comment on “why would they name a park ‘hungry mother’?” I found out the story and I’ll share it with you.

Finally, a story about a man all alone on a dark mountain road. Looking for help because his car won’t stop.

This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this one. I wouldn’t want to have anyone staring darkness trying to spot someone looking for their golden arm or their mother.

This year we have a special guest storyteller. James Dodson has been coming to Mayberry events for a few years now as “Andy” and I thought it would be fitting to have him tell a story that I know you’ll all enjoy.

In the search for a story to tell you that is in the same spooky vein as “The Golden Arm,” I found “Chief Swanee’s Gold” written by Craig Dominey and Lanny Gilbert on “The Moonlit Road” podcast/website. Craig granted me permission to share that story with you and it will be followed by a version of The Golden Arm folktale.

The Golden Arm was most famously told by Mark Twain and also used by him to instruct others in how to tell a story. In 2015, I first presented the Mark Twain version of the story in episode #349. This being the spooky time of the year, I thought it was time to tell another version of the story.

This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this episode I wouldn’t want to have anyone staring darkness trying to spot someone looking for their gold or their golden arm.

Thank you to the folks that attended the Mayberry Meet-up 2023 for your support of the podcast!

TCNW 604: Campfire Stories

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:24:32

The Golden Arm folktale has become a tradition here on Two Chairs to be told this time of year. This being Halloween and all so it is time to tell the version of the story I discovered in 2016. I also thought I’d add a couple of new campfire stories into the mix to start things off and to get that spooky feeling started before the main story.

Gather those you love nearby to keep you safe, turn down the lights and sit back as you listen, or watch, to a tell sure to keep Barney and Gomer awake all night.

The Golden Arm is a folktale appearing in cultures through oral tradition. Andy told a version of this story on The Andy Griffith Show but this being the spooky time of the year, I thought it was time to tell yet another version of the story.

This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this episode…..I wouldn’t want to have them staring into the dark trying to see if someone thinks they might have their golden arm.

TCNW 502: Chief Sawnee’s Gold

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:31:01

In the last few years, I’ve retold the folktale of The Golden Arm several times during the Halloween season. If you enjoy that story, you might want to go back and listen to the past episodes because they are fun and spooky (http://imayberry.com/podcasts/tag/spooky/).

In my search for a story to tell you that is in the same spooky vein, I found Chief Sawnee’s Gold written by Craig Dominey and Lanny Gilbert on “The Moonlit Road” podcast/website. Craig granted me permission to share this story with you.

I really enjoy this one because I travel to the mountains of North Georgia almost yearly to have a few days to get away from things and spend time with a few high school friends. This story is set in the very mountains that I enjoy visiting so join me by the campfire and hear the tale of Chief Sawnee and his cursed gold. You might want to keep the fire going and have Barney or Gomer near by to keep you safe.

Visit The Moonlit Road for more stories like this one….sleep…well…..
