Two Chairs No Waiting

We continue our visit from last week to the March 5, 2011 a panel discussion on Southern Rural Humor in TV & Film held at the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival. This time we hear mostly from me, Allan Newsome, as I go into the positive aspects of how rural life was portrayed on The Andy Griffith Show.

As a reminder, the participants were Birmingham author Tim Hollis, actor Danny Vinson, media studies scholar Dr. Jacob Podber, and your host of this podcast.  The topic went a great deal into the portrayal of rural characters.

Much of the discussion has been about how rural people, mostly southern, were negatively portrayed  on television, radio, and film.  I attempted to move the discussion to the more positive feel to help the panel end on a high note.  Our love of The Andy Griffith Show and the characters we found there is not limited to folks from the south. There are fans from all parts of the United States and around the globe.  That, in itself, is a testament to the character and values found in Mayberry.

Those characters become like trusted friends. We look forward to visiting our friends as often as possible.  That’s true in “real” life and with our friends on the small screen living in our hometown of Mayberry, NC.

Cancelled! Back in March 1971 CBS went on a canceling spree and shut down production on all their rural comedies.  The end of the 1971 season saw the cancellation of Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Hee-Haw, Lassie, The Jim Nabors Hour, Hogans Heroes and of course Mayberry RFD. (Petticoat Junction was cancelled the previous season.)

That isn’t a complete listing but gives you the idea about how, as Alabama native Pat “Mr. Haney” Buttram put it, “CBS cancelled everything with a tree, even Lassie.”  At the time of the purge, Mayberry RDF was #15 in the ratings.

On Saturday March 5, 2011 a panel discussion was held as part of the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival on Southern Rural Humor in TV & Film.

The participants were Birmingham author Tim Hollis, actor Danny Vinson, media studies scholar Dr. Jacob Podber in the discussion, and the host of Two Chairs No Waiting Allan Newsome.  The topic went a great deal into the portrayal of rural characters on television, radio, and film.

Hear from Tim, from his portion of the panel, as we discussed the purge of rural programing.

We talk often to tribute artist for characters on The Andy Griffith Show and from time to time to the actual stars themselves.  I thought it would be nice to hear from some Mayberry fans.  What The Andy Griffith Show means to them and what it is they like about the show.

I met up with Mayberry fan Al Gandolfi back in March 2009 following an event in West Palm Beach, Florida held at Grace Fellowship.  The event was called “Mayberry Comes to Grace Fellowship” and Senior’s pastor Frank Ingram helped make that event happen.  You may think that the Mayberry events held around the country just “happen” but that’s certainly not true.

Al, like Pastor Ingram, also made a Mayberry event happen in his town.  It was called “Good Ole Days – A Tribute to Mayberry” and it was held in Cocoa, Florida on April 8th-9th, 2005.  We get to hear a bit from Al about the hard work that goes into making these events happen for all of us, the fans, to enjoy.

I believe you’ll enjoy getting to meet Al and you’ll certainly hear from a man that loves The Andy Griffith Show.  I think you might also hear put into words some of the same feelings you have when watching Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, and our other Mayberry neighbors.

In part 4 of our interview with Jackie Joseph, Ernest T. Bass’ darlin’ Romeena, we hear a bit about Howard “Ernest T. Bass” Morris and then move on to Elvis.  Sounds like a hard segue to make (what..Oh! In podcasting talk, a segue is a smooth transition from one topic to another) but Jackie makes it nicely.

We also hear about her time as a magician’s assistant and the dangers of levitation.

One more part of our interview is coming next week so stay tuned!

Part 2 of our interview with Jackie Joseph and we’ll be singing and talking.  Yeah…I said singing but don’t worry, it doesn’t last too long.

Jackie talks about more of the many classic television show which she’s been a part of.  The Doris Day Show, Dinky Dog, Petticoat Junction, That Girl, and Hogan’s Heroes.  This is just a sample of what we’ll he about over the next several episodes.
