Mayberry in the Midwest, 17-18 May 2014, was an amazing event so this episode I’m going to recap the event. I’m also going to share some clips I was able to get permission to use on the podcast.
This was the first year for Danville, IN to host Mayberry in the Midwest following a three year run in New Castle, IN which ended in 2004. So ten years later the town of Danville took up the call and became Mayberry for a weekend in May. The streets were lined with Mayberry patrol cars and smiles were popping out all over the town square.
The festival spread out all over town and on Sunday the 18th the Mayberry Squad Car Nationals were also held in Danville. It was big…BIG, big….Aw, Big at the word for it.
I hope you get just a little of the feeling of what the event was like as I describe what fans were able to experience during the weekend. You really do need to make plans to attend a Mayberry event because I know you’d walk away with wonderful memories.
A big thank you to Janet Anderson for the photos seen on the video version of the podcast!

We talk often to tribute artist for characters on The Andy Griffith Show and from time to time to the actual stars themselves. I thought it would be nice to hear from some Mayberry fans. What The Andy Griffith Show means to them and what it is they like about the show.
I met up with Mayberry fan Al Gandolfi back in March 2009 following an event in West Palm Beach, Florida held at Grace Fellowship. The event was called “Mayberry Comes to Grace Fellowship” and Senior’s pastor Frank Ingram helped make that event happen. You may think that the Mayberry events held around the country just “happen” but that’s certainly not true.
Al, like Pastor Ingram, also made a Mayberry event happen in his town. It was called “Good Ole Days – A Tribute to Mayberry” and it was held in Cocoa, Florida on April 8th-9th, 2005. We get to hear a bit from Al about the hard work that goes into making these events happen for all of us, the fans, to enjoy.
I believe you’ll enjoy getting to meet Al and you’ll certainly hear from a man that loves The Andy Griffith Show. I think you might also hear put into words some of the same feelings you have when watching Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, and our other Mayberry neighbors.

A Tribute to Mayberry Brings Good Ole Days to Cocoa – Cocoa Florida’s “Good Ole Days – A Tribute to Mayberry” which took place April 8 and 9, 2005, surprised everyone by being a smashing success. (Al Gandolfi is on the left of the photo on a knee in front of Goober, Floyd, and Opie.)
