The Andy Griffith Show was front of mind in Marion, KY on Saturday night’s Old Kentucky Hayride show in the historic Fohs Hall. Cutter & Cash and The Kentucky Grass band who preformed the last two years as the musical act on the Cruise to Mayberry invited Floyd the barber to be a special “secret” guess performer at the Old Kentucky Hayride on November 15, 2025.
They had “Floyd” (yes, I’m taking about myself in third person) hide down in the basement until time to take the stage just before the intermission half way through the show.
We’ll watch, or listen to, the LIVE performance as filmed by David Collins. My thanks to David for allowing Two Chairs to share his recording.
This week’s trivia questions is part 2 of Paul Mulik’s “Fun Girls” trivia. Last episodes part 1 questions were not super easy but you’ve hopefully had a week to study the Fun Girls and are prepared. Good luck and have fun answering.
Share the podcast with your friends. It doesn’t have to be this episode, you have 864 others to pick from so give your friend the one you think they’d like best.

There has been a lot of conversation on the internet in the last few weeks about Floyd. We all know who Floyd is, the barber in Mayberry, but the talk has been about the 1st Floyd and the 2nd Floyd. You don’t know what I’m talking about? You only remember one Floyd? We’ll that’s what we’re going to talk about and help you come up to speed.
An actor by the name of Walter Baldwin was the first person to play Floyd the barber. He was only in one episode and was replaced by the Floyd we all know and love, played by Howard McNear. I have a very special place in my heart for Howard McNear since his is the version of Floyd I play tribute to at Mayberry festivals.
I’ve got a lot of good information about the character of Floyd the barber that I know you’re going to enjoy.
We’ll read some trivia questions and have some fun.

On episode #573 and #574 we heard a great interview with Maggie “Charlene” Peterson that was recorded in 2019 in Calhoun, GA at the “A Touch of Mayberry” event. As part of that event, tribute artists for Otis Campbell and Floyd the barber were there to warm up the crowd and keep things going.
This episode we get to here from Otis (Kenneth Junkin) and Floyd (Allan Newsome) live on stage entertaining. They tell several Mayberry related stories I know you’ll enjoy.
Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring “Mayberry in color.”

500!Wow…I never intended to do this podcast past episode 249 since that would have matched the number of episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. Here we are at twice that number and you are still listening. THANK YOU!
Since reaching 500 episodes is a milestone, I thought it would be fitting to do something special and thanks to Joe Gritton I think this episode will be special.
Joe wrote a script for an episode of The Andy Griffith Show and we’ve turned it into an “old time radio” version of The Andy Griffith Show. It’s like finding a lost episode featuring our friends from Mayberry.
Two years ago “Mayberry After Mid-day” was released to sound like an actual episode of The Andy Griffith Show from beginning to end. Now we have a second episode, “The New Barber.”
Writer Joe Gritton provided the script featuring Mayberry barber, Floyd Lawson, and door-to-door salesman, Bert Miller, and a few other Mayberry notables. Sit back and use your imagination to picture the goings on in Mayberry, NC while you listen to this “old time radio” program.
Randy Turner will return next week with his This Week in Mayberry History.

As I’m recording this is Presidents Day in the United States so I wanted to use that topic as a theme for this episode. The first President that comes to mind with I think “The Andy Griffith Show” is Floyd the barber’s favorite, Calvin Coolidge. Since the two go together, let’s hear from FAQs about Floyd and follow up with some quote from President Coolidge. I think you’ll enjoy both!
Bonus: This week in Mayberry History provides us with some great facts about how Mayberry got started on The Danny Thomas Show and more.

What if The Andy Griffith Show had been on the radio? I mean old time radio? Wouldn’t it be great to discover that there were lost episodes with our Mayberry friends in them?
Four years ago “Mayberry After Mid-day” was released here on Two Chairs but it was across two episodes (#191 &192). This speical edition is created to sound like an actual episode of The Andy Griffith Show from beginning to end.
Writer Joe Gritton provided a wonderful script featuring Mayberry barber, Floyd Lawson, and door-to-door salesman, Bert Miller. Sit back and use your mind’s eye to picture the goings on in our hometown of Mayberry, NC while listening to this “old time radio” program.
We begin “Mayberry After Mid-day” with Bert Miller walking down the sidewalk of Main Street heading from the Mayberry Grande toward the courthouse. As Bert nears Floyd’s barber shop, he slows down and considers sitting down for a rest on the bench outside the barber shop window. Join them now in Mayberry and hear what happens.

In late January 2014 The Andy Griffith Show cast member and all around great guy, LeRoy Mack performed for a packed house at the Zion Community Center near Gordo, AL. The community center is an old two room school house that now acts as the gathering place for family reunions and special events. LeRoy agreed to perform for an evening event in order to raise money for the center to be able to pay their insurance bills and whatnot.
What does that have to do with the Floyd & Otis at Zion title of this episode? We’ll, I’m glad you asked! LeRoy was joined by Ken “Otis” Junkin (who actually attended Zion when it was still a school) and Allan “Floyd” Newsome (your host) for the evening and it was a fun night, let me tell you.
I can’t play LeRoy’s performance because he makes a living performing and selling his music but I can give you a taste of the fun that can be had in Mayberry. We get to hear the opening act of the evening which was Floyd & Otis entertaining the crowd for twenty minutes or so. You’re going get to hear what you’re missing by not attending the Mayberry events held throughout the country. Make plans to attend one near you….you’ll love it.
