There was a “lady barber” in Mayberry? We’ll, no…not on The Andy Griffith Show but in the town that Mayberry is loosely based upon there is a lady barber with Mayberry ties. Her name is Donna Hiatt and she’s the niece of Russell Hiatt who owned and operated “Floyd’s City Barber Shop” on Mt. Street in Mt. Airy, NC until he passed away in May 2016. Donna has a great story to tell and writer Bill Colvard of The Mt. Airy News captured it in ink on the last day of 2017.

The 5th Mayberry Meet-up was held this past weekend in Mt. Airy, NC. What is the Meet-up? It’s a group of Mayberry fans gathering together to have a relaxing weekend visit to Andy Griffith’s hometown to experience a slower pace. A visit to the Andy Griffith Museum was one option of the many things to do during the day and that included a chance to meet Betty Lynn, Mayberry’s Thelma Lou, and get her autograph.
About 70 people were part of the group who met on Friday and Saturday evenings for food, fellowship, and Mayberry fun. We shared Mayberry trivia, stories, laughter, and episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. All that was followed by a Mayberry Bible Study session on Sunday morning for those able to attend before heading home.

We just got home from the Mayberry Meet-up 2016 held in Mount Airy, NC the weekend of 8-9 July. Jan and I had a great time and from the reports I heard so did the other 55 to 60 people who were able to attend. The weather was really good for July in the south, especially on Saturday night, and the friends were first rate.
This episode is a report about the goings on and hopefully it will get you geared up to attend a Mayberry event near you. Getting together with Mayberry people is one of the best times you can have without doing anything your mom wouldn’t want to hear about.

I’m always watching the web for information on The Andy Griffith Show and I ran across this great story from the The Daily Journal from the Kankakee Valley, IL. I wrote to them for permission to use their article in the podcast and they were nice enough to let me use it.
The story is called “Andy Griffith’s hometown abounds with touches of Mayberry.” It gives a fun look into the town of Mt. Airy, NC and some insight into Andy Griffith’s life.
It’s also a good lead in to the next Mayberry Meet-up to be held 8-9 July 2016 in Mt. Airy! I hope you’ll make plans to be with us and enjoy so great Mayberry related fun. It’s a relaxing weekend of fellowship, fun, and Mayberry experiences like attending Neal Brower’s lecture on the “Andy’s Rich Girlfriend” episode of TAGS, July 9th at 2 p.m., in the Andy Griffith Museum Theatre in Mount Airy, N.C. We’ll also be watching TAGS episodes at the gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn on both evenings. Make you’re reservations at the Motor Inn now and join us for the fun.

Hello Mayberry! Hopefully you knew about the 2015 Mayberry Meet-up that was held in Mt. Airy, NC the weekend of July 17th through the 19th because I did all I could to let folks know we were getting together for some Mayberry fun. If you didn’t get the word, I’m certainly sorry because you missed a fun and relaxing weekend.
2015 marked the 3rd meet-up at the Mayberry Motor Inn in Mt. Airy. This time Jan and I arrived in Mt. Airy early on Thursday so we could start the long weekend early. It turned out that the Newsome’s weren’t the only ones wanting to get and early start on a long weekend.
I know you’ll enjoy this report about this weekend of Mayberry fun.

Otis Campbell tribute artist Kenneth Junkin and I were blessed to be able make a trip from our Alabama home up to Mount Airy, NC to celebrate the 90th birthday of Russell Hiatt. Russell is the owner and proprietor of Floyd’s City Barber Shop right there on Main Street in Mount Airy and is a man who holds the spirit of Mayberry in his heart.
Russell was born January 28, 1924 and is the second oldest active barber in the United States. The occasion of his 90th birthday brought fan and friends to a snowy Mount Airy from all over the southeast. His barber shop was packed with people as they came to wish Russell happiness on a day declared Russell Hiatt Day by the city of Mount Airy and Mayor Deborah Cochran.
“Awh…big ain’t the word for it.”
