This interview was recorded on the 2024 Cruise to Mayberry. Part 1 was last episode and in part 2 Dennis talks more about Mayberry and discusses how his time as a child actor wrapped up. There are questions from the Mayberry cruisers who attended the interview as well.

If you didn’t know, Mayberry lost a wonderful man on May 9, 2026. Dennis Rush, who played Opie’s friend Howie in eight episodes over a two and a half year period.

Dennis began coming to Mayberry Days, and other Mayberry events in 2018 and had become much loved by fans. His joy and love for his time on The Andy Griffith Show and at discovering how much fans remembered his appearances on the show was heartwarming.

Dennis has been featured here on the podcast in an one-on-one interview (TCNW #777) and again along with fellow castmate Keith Thibodeaux, Johnny Paul, (TCNW# 839) but he has so many amazing stories of his career that I wanted to make sure you heard.

In part 1, Dennis talked mostly about his easily career and a portion of his time on The Andy Griffith Show so go back and give it a listen if you missed it.

Don’t miss either portion of this interview. I would suggest that you go back and listen to/watch his past interviews as well. Some things are revisited but his story telling was second to none.

He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

Andy and Barney in the Big City was the 57th episode filmed and aired of The Andy Griffith Show. (S2.E25)

We’ll play Mayberry trivia all about “Andy and Barney in the Big City.”

Plot Summary Andy and Barney in the Big City:

Andy and Barney get involved in trying to catch a jewel thief while on a work trip to Raleigh. Barney gets into trouble by acting like an important officer when he lets the jewel thief know who would be the best target at the hotel.

We’ll review some notes and “Odd Facts Known by Few” related to the episode Andy and Barney in the Big City.

We’ll go over the answers for the trivia questions and play some “who said it?” trivia provided by Mayberry trivia expert, Paul Mulik.

We just celebrated Mother’s Day here in the U.S. and it made me wonder if there were any references during The Andy Griffith Show about mothers or Mother’s Day. There are no dedicated Mother’s Day episodes during the run of The Andy Griffith Show. That aligns with its gentle, everyday small-town storytelling rather than holiday-specific plots.

References to mothers are subtle, infrequent, and often tied to character dynamics, with Aunt Bee serving as the central maternal/surrogate figure for Andy and Opie.

I’ll dig into some “mom” related topics like: Opie’s Mother (Andy’s late wife); Barney Fife’s Mother; Howard Sprague’s Mother; and, Aunt Bee as Mother Figure.

We even have trivia by Paul Mulik about Motherhood that we’ll play at the very beginning (so I don’ give away any answers), so enjoy playing along.

I’ll go over some of the upcoming Mayberry events that you should be planning to attend, if you can.

After all that we’ll try the last few questions from the 2026 Mayberry – I Love Lucy Festival we haven’t already covered in previous weeks.
