This week is the conclusion of our recording from the 1994 Mayberry Squad Car Rendezvous (I mistakenly said 1993 during the podcast). Counting last weeks episode, we have almost an hour of interviews with Howard Morris, Betty Lynn, and Jean Carson for you to enjoy.  If you haven’t listened to last weeks podcast be sure to go back and give it a listen but you don’t have to listen to them in order.

If you enjoy the interviews, you might want to actually watch the video version of the episodes to be able to see these wonderful stars and feel even more like you were there.  The videos are in the show notes or you can go to our YouTube channel to enjoy the fun.

Below is a list of the questions you’ll hear addressed on this episode.

  • Did any of you get to visit with Hal Smith “Otis” before he passed?
  • When the Darlings played music on the show, was it live?
  • Howard, can you name the bodies of water?
  • How much input did Andy have on the characterization of the parts?
  • Do Daphne and Thelma Lou know how to sew up their fingers like Goober?
  • Howard, do you have a burning desire for Charlene?
  • Barney and Andy finally got mad at the Fun Girls, you said……
  • How did you keep getting out of jail?
  • Do you stay in touch with Joyce Jameson?
  • How many hours a day did you have to rehearse to do a half hour show?
  • Jean, how often do you go back to West Virginia?
  • What was is like to work with Howard “Floyd” McNear?
  • Howard talks about what being on “live” television means.
  • Has there ever been any talk about making a new series of Mayberry?
  • Did any of you take acting lessons?
  • Did you have any idea at the time that you were working on a television classic?
  • What caused the changes in the show after the first season?
  • Betty, on Return to Mayberry there was a scene with Jim Nabors singing that was cut. Why?
  • What can we do about networks/stations cutting parts of the show out for more commercials?
  • Did you do any of the sponsor shots during the series?
  • It’s me, it’s me…it’s Ernest T.

Thank you for joining me for the Mayberry Bible Study Podcast.

Download the full lesson plan so you can follow along as you listen to the study.

Lesson Introduction

Opie has become acquainted with a new boy in town named Arnold Winkler. Arnold is a spoiled brat who believes he can get away with anything. When Arnold discovers that Opie gets a mere quarter-a-week allowance and has to do chores to get it, he tells Opie that he’s being taken advantage of. Arnold doesn’t have to work for his allowance and believes that no kid should.

Opie decides to quietly demand that his father raise his allowance to 75 cents (the amount Arnold gets), and he says he should not have to do any chores. Opie is obviously uncomfortable making these demands, and he takes it well when Andy refuses to comply. Arnold tells Opie that “man to man” talks always fail. He advises Opie that throwing a temper tantrum will get him whatever he wishes. Arnold says it always works.

Lesson Points:

Some of the points we’ll hit during this study are below. For a complete list, download the lesson plan.

  • Value of a Good Work Ethic (Gal. 6:7)
  • Letting Ourselves Rule Our LivesArnold
  • Skills of ParentingAndy
  • Learning from MistakesOpie

I’ve been going through my old 8mm video tapes and ran across the 1994 Mayberry Squad Car Rendezvous (I mistakenly said 1993 during the podcast).  Finding things like this is like Christmas coming early because this video has almost an hour of interviews with Howard Morris, Betty Lynn, and Jean Carson that, unless you were there, most Mayberry fans will never have heard.

It’s always fun to find things like this to share with you because it’s original content you won’t get anywhere else.  This is part 1 of 2.  Below is a list of the questions you’ll hear addressed on this episode.

  • Favorite Episode?
  • What was Aunt Bee like?
  • Do you ever see/talk to Andy?
  • Howard, how were you chosen to be on The Show of Shows?
  • Do you know Mr. Schwamp’s real name? (Nobody knows his name.)
  • Does Howard have kids/grandkids as wiry as he is?
  • Why did Thelma Lou love Barney?
  • What did Daphnie think about Andy/what attracted her to Andy?
  • Did Richard Linke’s wife play parts on TAGS? (The cast didn’t know but she wasn’t on the show.)
  • Howard, were you a director or an actor first? What did you direct?
  • Do you ever run into the “Darling” clan?
  • Did you enjoy making Return to Mayberry?
  • How is Don Knotts health?
  • Betty, what was Thelma Lou’s occupation?
  • Barney can’t sing….
  • Tim Allen was on an award show and thanked Howard Morris, was that you?
  • Betty, did you ever have a relationship with Don Knotts outside the set?
  • Howard, were you married at the time the shows were being produced?
  • Do you three watch the old episodes?
  • Jean, which role did you like the best? Fun Girl or escaped convict?
  • What’s your favorite episode?
  • Is your personality similar to the character on the show?
  • Did Andy ever ask any of you to be on Matlock?
  • Any contact with Jim Nabors?
  • When Jeff Pruitt came to town looking for a wife we saw a different side of Barney.
  • Could Howard Morris do Ole Aunt Maria?
  • Did you do much improvising during the shows or stay with the script?

Andy Griffith passed way on July 3, 2012 and we covered his passing for four episodes in a row (196-199). Since then, I haven’t attempted to say more about Andy because there was so much said then by not only me but by the American people in general. Andy was loved by so many and it was shown by the outpouring of comments by the media as well as by “regular” folks like you and me.

I ran across something recently that I either missed back in 2012 or had forgotten. It’s a story written by Joanne Ostrow, the Denver Post Television Critic, about how Andy’s passing impacted his daughter Dixie Nann Griffith. I e-mailed Joanne and she was kind enough to allow me to share her article with you here on the podcast.

I’m putting together a “schedule” of things we’ll be doing but PLEASE realize that nothing is mandatory and nobody will have hurt feelings if you choose to do other things during the times.  I’m just letting folks know where I will be and inviting you all to join me if it fits your schedule.

Friends…all the below are options/suggestions for things to do in Mt. Airy.  The main events, to me, are the gatherings at the gazebo to visit and get to know one another and Professor Brower’s class on Saturday.  I hope as many as possible will find time to drop by and grow our Mayberry friendships.

Jan and I are looking forward to seeing you all in Mayberry!

–Allan Newsome
floyd@iMayberry.com

== Friday Schedule ==

When you wake – 4:30 pm

— Visit downtown Mt. Airy. Pick and choose

— Snappy Lunch (breakfast, lunch, or both – closes at 1:15 so eat early)

— Drop by Floyd’s City Barber Shop

— Visit shops on Main Street (be sure to visit Mayberry on Main)

— Ice Cream at Barney’s

Mayberry Squad Car Tours starting at Wally’s (30 minute ride)

— Visit Main Oak Emporium (Mayberry Jail & Taylor’s front porch photo locations)

— Visit Pilot Mountain either the town or the park…or both.

4:45 – 7:30 pm

— Eat Dinner at “The Depot” in Dobson, NC (Or head out on your own to eat)

— Gather at Mayberry Motor Inn for trip to “The Depot” in Dobson, NC (about a 15-20 minute trip south on 601 out of Mt. Ariy).

— Bring your camera because it’s a sight to behold.  Here’s a link to the web site – http://www.codycreek.net

— I figured we’d head down there a little early because they tend to get busy and to allow more “visiting” time back at the Mayberry Motor Inn after eating

7:30 – 11:00 pm (or later)

— Gather at the Mayberry Motor Inn in the gazebo area (you don’t have to be staying there to come over and visit).

— Bring sodas, tea, punch and some snacks if you have ’em.

— BRING lawn chairs if you have ’em. (There are some chairs at the gazebo but to be safe, bring your own.)

— Watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show together on a screen under the stars.

— Visit with friends.

— Maybe record a podcast episode together.  Think about a good quote about what Mayberry means to you and I’ll record you guys telling us one at time.

== Saturday Schedule ==

— Visit downtown Mt. Airy. Pick and choose

— Snappy Lunch (breakfast, lunch, or both – closes at 1:15 so eat early)

== Sunday Schedule ==

pre-noon

— Option 1: Visit church of your choice.
