Let’s continue our tribute to George Lindsey which began in episode 187 of Two Chairs No Waiting.  Mr. Lindsey passed away on May 6, 2012 but he will never be forgotten by his family or his friends.

The 15th Annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival held in Florence, Alabama on March 1-3, 2012 saw as part of the event the dedication of a new theater named after Mr. Lindsey.  The George Lindsey Theatre and the Ernest Borgnine Performance Hall ribbon cutting was a special event and as part of it we saw and heard from George as he did a question and answer session with those in attendance.

The first part of that presentation was in last weeks podcast and we conclude George’s portion in this episode.

The news that George Lindsey passed away on May 6, 2012 hit hard to Mayberry fans all around the country.  I thought to ease the hurt we would take some time to celebrate his life by hearing from directly from him.

The 15th Annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival was held in Florence, Alabama on March 1-3, 2012 and as part of the festival include the dedication of a new Black Box theater named after Mr. Lindsey himself.  The George Lindsey Theatre and the Ernest Borgnine Performance Hall ribbon cutting was a special event. The most special part was seeing George and getting a chance to listen to him as he spoke at the dedication ceremony.

Part 1 of Mr. Lindsey’s presentation and some memories from listeners will bring you back for more….just like George did.

We had fun last week with Mayberry tribute artist Ken “Otis” Junkin (a.k.a. Big Maude) and I didn’t want the fun to end.

This episode we get to hear a bit more from Ken but this time it’s about his trip to Hollywood back in January 2000 to see Don Knotts get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Episode 97 of Two Chairs No Waiting was devoted to the topic of Don Knotts’ star and you’ll want to go back and give that podcast a listen after you hear Ken’s tale.  Atta boy, Ken!

We’ll also hear a short but fun story by tribute artist Christie McLendon who fills the role quite well of Charlene Darling Wash’s daughter, all growed up, Andylina.  You should remember Andylina. The baby version of her was betrothed to Opie Taylor but some witchery on Andy’s side of the family broke off the betrothal.

For the last several years there has been a Mayberry tribute artist for the character of “Big” Maude Tyler (a.k.a. Ralph Henderson).  What many of you may not know is that Big Maude is portrayed by the same person who performs as the tribute artist for Otis Campbell.  That’s right, Ken Junkin is Otis and Big Maude.  That’s the actor of the man.

We get to hear about Ken’s experience purchasing the shoes need to portray the convict at large and how the ladies in the shoe store reacted to his purchase.

The conversation with Ken was recorded following the Mayberry Comes to Westminster event held in April 2012.  Several of the tribute artist and Mayberry fans were sitting in the lobby of the hotel enjoying some good fellowship with fellow Mayberry fans and I encouraged Ken to tell his story.

Two Chairs No Waiting 184: Lurene Tuttle

Two Chairs No WaitingHost: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:20:28

Do you know Lurene Tuttle?  No?  I bet you do but you didn’t even know it.  In past episodes of Two Chairs No Waiting I’ve talked about The Great Gildersleeve old time radio show. Turns out my friend Jimbo made me aware that there’s another connection between Gildersleeve and Mayberry.

It seems the role of Marjorie, Gildersleeve’s niece,  was played from the premiere radio program through 1944 by Lurene Tuttle. Tuttle was known as one of the most versatile actresses on radio, often appearing in 15 shows a week (Marjorie was junior to Tuttle by 20 years).

What?  You still don’t know who Lurene Tuttle is.

Lurene Tuttle played  “the shoplifter” in the The Andy Griffith Show episode The Shoplifter (episode #116).

I mentioned this online and our friend from the iMayberry Community, Briscoe Darling, made me aware of something I had never realized.   He let me know that the lady shoplifter was the same lady that played Annabelle Silby in Opie’s Charity (episode #8)!  Briscoe’s education is certainly worth every penny.

Another bit of trivia for you, Lurene Tuttle was the mother-in-law of composer John Williams?.
