Imagine my surprise when watching Joe Friday on Dragnet when who should appear but Mayberry’s own Frances Bavier as Hazel Howard. The episode of Dragnet is from the television version of the crime drama and was first aired on May 27, 2954. The title is “The Big False Make” (season 3 episode 39).
Strangely, the future Andy Griffith Show costar Frances Bavier is billed in the closing credits by her character name “Hazel Howard” rather than her real name. This final episode of Dragnet’s third season is based on a radio broadcast of May 17, 1953.
We also discuss a little about the 1966 Studebaker Daytona which was the personal car of Frances. Reports are that she had people try to convince her to get a newer car but she loved the Studebaker and would never consider getting a different vehicle.
The car was purchased for $20,000 a the June 2, 1990 auction of her personal property. The proceeds of the auction went, at Frances’ bequest, to North Carolina Public Television.

Frances Bavier is known to everybody as Aunt Bee from our home town of Mayberry, NC. In 1972 Frances retired from acting and moved to Siler City, NC. Ms. Bavier was a native of New York so when asked why she choose to retire to Siler City she said, “I fell in love with North Carolina, all the pretty roads and the trees.”
In this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting we’ll hear from Carolina Camera reporter Bill Ballard who was able to interview Frances Bavier not too long after she had moved to North Carolina.
Andy Griffith addressed the fact that the two sometimes clashed during the series’ run. Andy reported on Larry King Live – April 24, 1998, that Frances had phoned him four months before she died. She said she was deeply sorry for being “difficult” during the series’ run.
Frances was born December 14, 1902 and passed away on December 6, 1989 at the age of 86.

James Best, known to Mayberry fans as guitar player Jim Lindsey and to fans around the world as Rosco P. Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazzard, is up to something special. He’s making a movie. Not just any movie but one that I’m sure that Goober Pyle would love. After all, he watched “The Monster That Ate Minnesota” ten times!
I’m sure that means Goober watched “The Killer Shrews” (1959) at least a few times while it was playing at the Mayberry Grand. That can only mean that James’ newest production is going to be high up on Goob’s must see list. It’s name, “Return of the Killer Shrews.” That’s right, shooting on the sequel begins in June 2011!

In this “The Andy Griffith Show” episode entitled, ‘The Darlings Are Coming” which originally aired on March 18, 1963, the Darlings come down from the mountains to invade Mayberry for the first time – “More power to you.”

Back in 1972, while visiting the Indy 500 race with some friends, Jim Nabors was asked to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana.” He didn’t really even know the song and it was only minutes before he was to sing it as part of the opening ceremonies. In the time since, Jim has only missed singing the song to start the race about 6 times.
Two Chairs No Waiting researcher, Mike Peacock, found this interview with Jim Nabors and was able to provide permission to use the audio. You’ll get to hear Jim tell about singing at the race and how it all got started. Interviewer Ed Wenck of 93 WIBC was able to speak with Mr. Nabors recently. Enjoy the interview.

Your fellow fans of The Andy Griffith Show have been writing and calling in to Two Chairs No Waiting for a while and we finally get to take some time to listen to their thoughts.
We also discovered some fun trivia on this episode about a pocket on Barney’s shirt that appears from nowhere. I’m thinking that witchery might run in Barney’s family. Remember TCNW 62: The Magical Christmas Card and TCNW 86: Barney’s Magic Badge? Both involved Barney. And now THIS. I tell you, something foul is afoot.
I hope you enjoy the show and thanks to all that provided feedback. I love hearing from you.
