We’re starting off this episode with Randy Turner and his “This Weeek in Mayberry History” concluding his report on Hal Smith. He also has a special announcement that you’re going to enjoy hearing.

SpiritWalker couldn’t do a report for us this week so he did the next best things and sent me trivia questions for us. The questions all come from the first 10 episodes of season one of The Andy Griffith Show. They’re a little hard because they are from specific episodes. If you watch the video version of the podcast, you will see screen shots confirming that the answer given is indeed correct for the episode in question.

Actress Maggie Peterson played Charlene Darling on The Andy Griffith Show but she was so much more. We lost her on Sunday May 15, 2022 so please join me in celebrating her life from Greeley to Mayberry.

In trying to come up with the best was to honor Maggie and to help fans learn more about her, I realized that an interview with Maggie recorded in Calhoun, GA at an event called “A Touch of Mayberry” would allow us to hear her tell the story in her own words. The year was 2018 and it was a special evening.

She grew up in Greeley, CO where she and her brother started a band called “The JaDa Quartet.” They played places around Colorado and eventually made it to New York where the band was booked on several television series as musical guests. Andy’s manager, Richard Link, helped the group get the bookings and they were off to a great start. Maggie moved to New York then out to California where she landed the role of Charlene Darling. She had roles in movies, commercials and in guest staring roles in series like “The Odd Couple,” “The Bill Dana Show,” “Gomer Pyle, USMC,” “Green Acers,” and “Mayberry, RFD.”

Welcome to the Mayberry Devotional.  I’m sure by now, most have heard of the passing of Maggie Peterson Mancuso.  Maggie, aka Charlene Darling, passed away Sunday May 15.  According to her family, she passed away quietly in her sleep with her family present.  Maggie was loved by all and up until about three years ago was still attending fan gatherings representing the show.  I got to meet her several times and she was always happy to meet her fans and so appreciative of everyone coming to say hello to her.  She was loved by all and will be missed.  

Today I’m going to skip ahead a few episodes and look at season three, episode twenty five of The Andy Griffith Show, “The Darlings are Coming”.  This is the first episode where we see the Darling family, along with Maggie Peterson as she becomes the one and only Charlene Darling.  The title of my devotional today is “Forgive Because We Have Been Forgiven” and I’ll also be looking at Scripture from Micah 7:18a.

In January 2014 I received an e-mail that changed things for me. It was from this weeks guest, Cody Ray DesBiens. At the time he sent the e-mail, he was 19 years old and he said he was a “HUGE Andy Griffith Show fan” who watched episodes every night with his mom. That wasn’t the part that impacted me, though I was glad to hear a fairly young man was a Mayberry fan. What got me was that Cody had been diagnosed with a chronic type of Leukemia in October 2011.

He went through chemo and eventually needed a bone marrow and stem cell transplant. He was in the hospital for a long time and needed something to keep his mind off the pain and sickness. It was then that he came across the YouTube version of this podcast.

The thing that hit me was him saying that Two Chairs No Waiting helped him keep his mind off things. Wow…I was, and am, humbled by that and I’ve been wanting to have him as a quest ever since and FINALLY had a chance just last week.

I know you’re going to enjoy hearing Cody’s story directly from him LIVE from the IHOP.

We’ll hear this weeks installment of “Returning to Mayberry” by SpiritWalker that he’s calling “Chunkin’ Rocks.”
