TCNW 769: The New Housekeeper 2024

Two Chairs No Waiting
Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:34:50

I’m going to try and do something different for a while. I’ve started to do this before but always faded off on it and didn’t follow through. We’re going to try and talk about one episode of The Andy Griffith Show most every week followed by some trivia and then talk about some cast birthdays.

That’s the plan but, we’ll see how well the plan survives the year. ha ha

This episode we start with the first episode of The Andy Griffith Show which is called The New Housekeeper. It first aired on October 3, 1960 and started everything that we still celebrate to this day.

NOTE: During this episode I erroneously reported that a publicity photo of a young Frances Bavier is seen on the wall of the Taylor living room as Andy walks from the kitchen to the front door. It will be seen in several first season episodes. As pointed out by Randy Turner in his fantastic collection of essays, Mayberry Firsts, the picture is in fact a print of the painting Child With An Apple by the French artist of the 18th century Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

We play some Mayberry Trivia to see how we can do, just for fun.

Finally, we check how which cast members have birthdays between January 1st and 19th to remember them all with smiles and joy.

I love The Andy Griffith Show and it doesn’t take much to get me talking about it to anyone who’ll listen. You may have noticed that after 514 podcast episodes so I’m not telling you much.

This week, Randy Turner got me watching The Andy Griffith Show episode “Guest of Honor” because of the report we’ll lead off with. Guest of Honor is a really fun episode with several quotes that are hard to forget. Let’s spend a few minutes walking through the episode and hear a few of the lines and segments that are etched in my memory.

Bonus: This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Bill Hickman.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:31:58

This episode we’ll be talking about the “Barney and the Choir” episode (#52) of TAGS from season two.  What got it in my mind is that spring has just begun and Good Ole 14-A was featured on this episode.  It’s real name is “Welcome Sweet Springtime” and way back on Two Chairs No Waiting #95 (Aug 3, 2010) we covered a lot of information about the music so you may want to go back and check out that podcast episode to get your fill of springtime music.

This episode, we’re just going to enjoy the magic that is Barney’s voice so sit back where you can and hang on!

Bonus:  This week in Mayberry History. (No Time for Sergeants)

Two Chairs No Waiting 207: Public Domain Episodes

Two Chairs No WaitingHost: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:18:10

A discussion over at the iMayberry Community drew me into a discussion about public domain episodes and what does it mean that the episodes are “public domain.”

The topic started out about the 1986 NBC TV movie “Return to Mayberry” but side tracked into other areas.  We’ll go through some of the fine points dealing with how hard I have to try not to break the copyright of VIACOM who owns The Andy Griffith Show.

Sit back and enjoy the podcast then head over The eBullet website and subscribe by e-mail or by the rss feed for you computer folks (subscribe to feed), or both.  You don’t want to miss it.

Bobby Fleet and his Band with a Beat has been the focus of the last two episodes of this podcast.  Both episodes of The Andy Griffith Show featuring Bobby Fleet were in the very first season of the series.   Now we move along to season 3 of The Andy Griffith Show when an episode titled “The Mayberry Band” aired on November 19, 1962 and introduced fans to Freddy Fleet and his band.

The mistake made by everybody, including me, is calling Freddy’s band “The Band with a Beat” just like Bobby’s band but that title is never used during the episode.

We always assume that Bobby’s and Freddy’s bands are the same and while Freddy does mention that every time he comes through Mayberry that Andy tries “pot bellied schemes” we don’t know that it is the same band.

Maybe Bobby and Freddy Fleet are brothers who both have bands that travel the state and sometimes come through Mayberry.  Maybe the script continuity person missed this one and gave Mr. Fleet the wrong name.  We’ll never know and it’s for fans to discuss and decide for themselves.

We do know that Freddy Fleet is played by actor Joseph Sirola (born October 7, 1929). Joseph, or Joe, Sirola was once a case worker for the New York City Department of Welfare before becoming perhaps the most successful “voice-over” actor in the history of the profession. His voice has been heard in scores of advertisements since the 1960’s and one cannot listen to a radio or watch a television in a major market without hearing his distinctive voice.

In his long career, Sirola has done everything from beckoning people to Club Med to convincing them to rent from Hertz.  Listen to the podcast for a chance to hear his voice over work and I’m sure you’ll recognize his voice.

In the last episode of the podcast we talked about the 3rd episode of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS), “The Guitar Player.”  James Best played “Jim Lindsey” and Henry Slate played  “Bobby Fleet.  Now we move on to the character Bobby Fleet’s second appearance on the series in “The Guitar Player Returns.”

“The Guitar Player Returns” is only 7 months and 28 episodes later and the 31st episode of season 1 of TAGS (Oct 17, 1960 – May 16, 1961) and when “Bobby Fleet” appears, he’s a different man.  No longer is Henry Slate playing the character but instead Fleet is played by Herb Ellis.

I mentioned the name Herb Ellis last episode and asked that you remember his name.  There has been discussion about who played the guitar on close-ups of “Jim Lindsey.”  James Best has stated at reunion events that he thought Herb Ellis was the one doing the actual playing of the guitar but he said he wasn’t certain. The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watcher’s Club member Paul Mulik asked Earle Hagen (the music director for TAGS) who was playing for Jim and he answered he was pretty sure was Barney Kessel.

Barney Kessel as a jazz guitarist from Oklahoma and is considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarist of the 20th century.  He was a member of many prominent jazz groups as well as a “first call” guitarist for studio, film, and television recording sessions.

Back to Herb Ellis.  Turns out Herb Ellis is also the name of a jazz guitarist but this is a different Herb Ellis from the one who plays “Bobby Fleet” in this episode.  That’s right, there are two “Herb Ellis'” just like there are two “Bobby Fleet’s.”   Let’s leave the guitarist, his name is Mitchell Herbert Ellis (Aug 4, 1921 – Mar 28, 2010), here and move long to the actor.

Herb Ellis the actor was born in Cleveland, OH on Jan 17, 1921 ( 91 years ago the day this podcast is released) and his birth name was Herbert Siegel.  Herb Ellis the actor is best known for work with Jack Webb.  He played Officer Frank Smith on the TV version Dragnet (1952) and many other characters on the radio version of Dragnet.  He appeared on many other series Peter Gunn and Perry Mason.
