Two Chairs No WaitingWe first meet Bobby Fleet on The Andy Griffith Show episode “The Guitar Player.”  You’ll remember that episode with James Best as “Jim Lindsey” who Andy helps find a job playing guitar.  There are close-ups of “Jim” playing the guitar and Jame Best can’t play the guitar. Mr. Best has said at events that the fellow who played the close-ups may have been Herb Ellis.  We’ll talk about Herb more later (next podcast) so keep him in your memory.

The character “Bobby Fleet” was played by Henry Slate.  Mr. Slate appeared in only one episode of The Andy Griffith Show but he was in a long list of movies including Winged Victory, You’re in the Navy Now, The Jazz Singer, Rock around the Clock, The Shootist, Norma Rae, and the Disney films The Strongest Man in the World, No Deposit No Return, Gus, The Shaggy D.A., Pete’s Dragon, The Cat from Outer Space and Herbie Goes Bananas.  He was also on many TV series like Mission: Impossible, The Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, Barney Miller, Quincy M.E., and Lassie.

We’re going to enjoy meeting Bobby Fleet and the other characters that join us in “The Guitar Player.”  As I was going through this episode, I just kept finding great quotes that brought a smile to my face and I’m sure they’ll do the same for you.

Two Chairs No Waiting

As this episode of the podcast is being recorded, it is the 50th anniversary of the first airing of episode number 4 of The Andy Griffith Show titled “Ellie Comes to Town.” That fact and as a result of a voice mail I received this week it seemed fitting to focus just a bit on this episode.

Kevin Burke recapped this episode on his “Burke on Mayberry” podcast(#6) back in April 2008 [a link to his podcast will be given below] but on Two Chairs we’re going to look at a few things that many of you may not have noticed.

We have links to some screen grabs and enlargements of some shots so you can see the things you’ll hear about during Two Chairs No Waiting.

Enjoy the show and tell Goober that Allan says “hey.”

To start the show, we have a fun bit of “Mayberry in real life” from a listener who wrote in and sent us some photos of his encounter. We’re following that up with a voice mail Mayberry Days memory from Tom and then we’re back to the bank book.

The issue that keeps raising it’s head is “who’s bank book was Andy looking at, his own or Parnell Rigsby’s, when he said, “Ain’t that the saddest bank book you ever saw?” Andy took the bank book out of the same cigar box that he had been keeping Mr. Rigsby’s change purse. I, and many others, have always believed that to be Andy’s bank book BUT there are also a lot of folks that think that it was Mr. Rigsby’s bank book.

I did two episodes of the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast (episodes 74 & 75) on that exact subject and I continue to receive feedback on this topic.

I did screen shots but you can’t tell from them who’s bank book it actually is. Only that there is gold or silver embossed logo/writing on the cover. It certainly appears to be a Savings Account type deposit book from a bank and it certainly not a checkbook ledger.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of the script for “Opie’s Fortune” (#136 season 5)? If so, perhaps it would have stage direction as to who’s bank book Andy is taking from the drawer. Your assistance would be wonderful.

As you can tell by the name of this episode, we’ll be hearing about “The Andy Griffith Show starring Andy Griffith; with Ronny Howard, Carl Griffith. Also starring, Don Knotts.”  Well, the announcer didn’t say that but I’m sure Andy would have liked it if he had.

In the episode “The Farmer Takes a Wife” guest staring the Skipper himself, Alan Hale Jr., as Jeff Pruitt we see Carl Griffith.  Listen to this episode of Two Chairs No Waiting to find exactly who Carl is and where in the episode he appears.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Our last episode was the question and so it’s fitting that this would be our answer.  A lot of folk either called or wrote in with their opinion about who’s bank book Andy Taylor was looking at in the episode “Opie’s Fortune.”

The question, if you didn’t hear #74 was: Who’s bank book was Andy looking at, his own or Parnell Rigsby’s, when he said, “Ain’t that the saddest bank book you ever saw?” Go back and listen if you missed Two Chairs No Waiting #74…we’ll wait on you.

Let’s see what fellow fans had to say.

Two Chairs No Waiting

This episode we’ll be talking about the episode called Opie’s Fortune (#136 season 5) of The Andy Griffith Show which was first aired on November 11, 1964.  In the episode, Opie finds a man’s purse containing $50 cash. When he tells his pa, Andy tells Opie that if no one claims it within a week the money would be his.

Opie ends up getting the money but the owner turns up and that puts Andy in a spot of having to either take back the money from Opie or to pay back the man himself.

A question came up this past week. During the episode Andy take a bank book out of his desk drawer at the courthouse.  Who’s bank book was it?  Andy’s or Parnell Rigsby’s? “Ain’t that the saddest bank book you ever saw?”
