TCNW 438: Opie’s Birdhouse

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:22:49

When going through the Andy Griffith Museum a couple of weeks back, something in particular caught my eye. It was a birdhouse built by The Andy Griffith Show writer Harvey Bullock and called “Opie’s Birdhouse.”

The reason I took sure note of it is because I have one of Opie’s birdhouses and I knew a letter went along with my house but the letter was lost before I got the house. Thankfully, I was able to get a photo of the letter and now I know the details about how Opie built the birdhouse….now you will, too.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Jean Hagen.

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:21:31

This is our third episode with Neal Brower interviewing writer Harvey Bullock at Mayberry Days in 2002. Harvey Bullock (June 4, 1921 – April 23, 2006) wrote 31 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, 21 episodes of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. and co-wrote the TV movie Return to Mayberry with Everett Greenbaum. So much of what we, as fans, know of the town of Mayberry was created by the mind of this amazing man.

The audio isn’t perfect but this content is something you will not want to miss. Harvey didn’t seem to want to hold the mic up to his face so he’s a little hard to hear. From time to time there are sound artifacts that I’ve cleaned up as best I could so they wouldn’t be distracting.

In this episode Harvey discusses his joy at being one of the writers on The Andy Griffith Show, his favorite scene and how it wrote itself with him just sitting there as an observer.

You will not want to miss any of this series.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Cheerio Meredith.

Over the next few weeks, we have a real jewel to enjoy. Neal Brower interviewed Harvey Bullock at Mayberry Days in 2002.

The audio quality isn’t quite as good as you may be use to for this podcast but the content is something you won’t find anywhere else. Harvey didn’t want to hold the mic up to his face and the audio comes from a video tape so at times there are artifacts but I’ve cleaned it up to a point that I don’t think you’ll be distracted.

In this episode Harvey discusses his early career, meeting his wife Betty on the Today Show, Opie’s Hobo Friend, where “Tuscarora” and “Gollywobbler” came from, and so much more.

And this is just part one so be sure to come back for the rest.

Bonus:  This week’s installment of This Week in Mayberry History by Randy Turner featuring Bob Ross.

TCNW 423: Return to Mayberry Update

Two Chairs No Waiting

Two Chairs No Waiting

Host: Allan Newsome

Last episode we were reminded about the “Return to Mayberry” television movie by Randy Turner’s This Week in Mayberry History report so I thought it was fate when I ran across a forgotten Mayberry historical gem.

I was looking through the files on my computer trying to find a Mayberry related image and came across a folder named Everett. In that folder was a file named “ending.” Not a descriptive name but it made me want to open it to see what was in there. Turns out that it was a letter from The Andy Griffith Show writer Harvey Bullock from 1999 addressing a question about the “Return to Mayberry” and the possible alternate ending that was written.

This is BIG and I’m just sorry it’s been filed away in a digital folder for all these years but at least we get to hear the answer now.

Two Chairs No Waiting 232: Touch of the Pip

Host: Allan Newsome
Running time: 0:18:02

Back on TCNW #230 I mentioned finding several letters from TAGS writer Harvey Bullock.  Harvey wrote 32 episodes of TAGS and I have several wonderful letters he wrote to me answering questions that fans had asked him and writer Everett Greenbaum.

This episode we’ll find out exactly what is the “pip” and other things like what is Pygmalion and what does it have to do with The Andy Griffith Show.  See….you really do learn things from Mayberry.

I know you’ll enjoy the show.
